On June 5, 2011 BMW officially introduced brand new 1 series codenamed F20. Just like its predecessor, new car still features rear-wheel drive, 50:50 weight balance, a longitudinally-mounted engine and an advanced aluminum multilink suspension.
New 1 Series comes with brand new BMW N13 inline 4 petrol engine which develops 136 hp (101 kW) for 116 model and 170 hp (127 kW) in 118i model. However, diesel models are powered by BMW N47 engine which is slightly updated for 120d model, all engines are mated to 6 speed manual or 8 speed automatic gearbox.
Inside the cabin materials are much better than old 1 series, all models come with start-stop and air-conditioning as standard. With higher trims comes 8.8-inch (220 mm) flatscreen monitor and a Bluetooth hands-free with USB connectivity while BMW’s Drive Performance Control is standard on all models, which gives the driver four ‘modes’ to choose from. These include Comfort – the standard setting – and Sport – which sharpens steering, throttle and suspension, while Sport + allows more rear wheel slip. The F20 1 Series also includes the ECO PRO, which helps drivers save fuel, by adjusting throttle response to encourage more eco-minded driving and limiting the use of the air-conditioning, heated mirrors and seats. The increases in fuel economy are displayed on the dashboard, showing how far extra the car can travel as a result. To make car more unique to customers,BMW offers Sport Line and Urban Line models which differ by alloy wheels, kidney grille and other appearance-related features.

The BMW 1 Series interprets the characteristic design of the BMW automobiles in a young and spontaneous manner. Dynamics find its most modern form: authentic, lively and full of energy. Energy that you can sense. Even on the first glance.
Despite the completely new design, the front unmistakeably reveals the face of the BMW 1 Series family, with the kidney grille in dominant upright position, extensive headlights and rounded corners of the windscreen at the intersection with the roof. Distinctive lines and three-dimensional effects characterise the dynamically shaped bonnet. The kidney grille in the centre together with the horizontally sectioned headlights generates a strong presence, which is further reinforced in the xenon version by the innovative, slightly eccentric Corona rings. As a result, even when stationary, the entire vehicle points in only one direction – forwards.
The length of the bonnet, the large wheelbase and slightly sloping roof line confirm the compact, agile impression. Narrow window areas reinforce this effect. Large, inviting rear doors also give an indication of the spacious interior. | |||

A feeling of lightness spreads the moment you enter: the interior with its many and varied compartments boasts generous proportions, the instrument panel is particularly characterised and geared towards the driver’s needs. Comfort in its most beautiful form.
BMW designers talk of the layering system when explaining the styling concept for the interior of the BMW 1 Series. Drivers tend to talk of the lightness of the space when they describe the effect. Components such as the instrument panel or decorative trim strips blend to form a modern overall impression, providing a formal framework for the controls. Momentum and dynamics dominate the space. Freedom in design that is only made possible because the cockpit of a BMW consistently follows a principle of driver orientation in terms of functionality and operating comfort.
Each ergonomic challenge has been solved intelligently and with care. The best example? The Control Display, available on request for models equipped with the Professional radio and higher models. Following the BMW 6 Series, the BMW 1 Series is now the second range of models to feature a free-standing Control display, located in the middle above the centre console, thus retaining the impression of high quality created by the flat screen. One detail in an overall concept that derives its modern and innovative character from the inspired combination of creative visions with decades of experience. | |||

BMW N13 Engine

The N13 is a turbocharged straight-4 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in 2011 in the new BMW 1 Series, 116i/118i models. The N13 engine continues BMW's EfficientDynamics and will replace naturally aspirated BMW N43 four-cylinder engine. Aluminium engine block is from MINI Cooper S and shares it's bore/stroke dimensions. Except engine block, N13 is all new engine and it shares lot's of technology with BMW N20 engine, such as BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with twin-scroll turbocharger, HighPrecision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. BMW will use this engine in new 3 Series and MINI models.
