CURRENT MODELMERCEDES BENZ SLK (STANDARD SERIES)
The R172 represents the third generation of Mercedes-Benz SLK, and was launched in January 2011 with international sales starting spring 2011. Replacing the R171, the R172 continues the small luxury roadster concept that was initiated by the first SLK launched in 1996. The design follows the themes of both the first and second generation, but shares a new front look that is similar to the Mercedes-Benz SLS.
The third generation continues with the two-piece metal folding roof known as a Vario Roof, and also comes with the option of "Magic Sky Control" which turns a glass panel in the roof from transparent to opaque
|
Model range
The launch range includes two 1.8 L engines in two states of tune, the SLK 200 with 184 bhp (137 kW; 187 PS) and the SLK 250 with 204 bhp (152 kW; 207 PS). The SLK 350 features a new Mercedes 3.5 L V6 direct-injection engine producing 306 bhp (228 kW; 310 PS) with seven-speed automatic and a stop-start feature. An AMG version has been announced using a detuned, naturally-aspirated version of the M157 called the M152.The engine produces 422hp (310kW) and can propel the SLK 55 AMG to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.
|
Standard featres on the SLK model include 17” alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design and LED daytime running lights. Inside you’ll find sports seats in black cloth upholstery, extensive brushed aluminium trim, and a multi-function 3-spoke sports steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather with a flattened lower section.
|
Minor details, major rewards
When it comes to aerodynamic performance, seemingly insignificant adjustments can have a major impact. This is perfectly illustrated by the new SLK, which has seen its aerodynamics fine-tuned down to the smallest detail. For example, the new look exterior mirrors are attached at beltline level using specially designed slim stems that offer minimal aerodynamic resistance.
This meticulous approach has paid dividends on the new SLK, with its Cd value cut to just 0.30, outperforming the previous model’s 0.32. An impressive achievement, given the new model’s larger frontal area and near vertical front section. The new SLK-Class also offers the lowest levels of wind noise in its segment - top open or closed – ensuring a relaxing, enjoyable driving experience. |
The acclaimed vario-roof lets you effortlessly transform the SLK-Class from hard-top coupé to open-top roadster in a matter of seconds. Simply press the button on the centre console or the infra-red remote on the key fob.
Options include the stunning new panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control, which makes its debut on the SLK-Class. Thanks to a layer of liquid crystal within the glazed section, you can choose between clear or tinted glass at the touch of a button. Alternatively, choose the optional dark tinted panoramic version or the standard body-coloured all-metal construction. Whichever vario-roof you decide on, excellent thermo-acoustic insulation ensures a quiet, comfortable and refined driving experience when the roof is up. What’s more, the folding mechanism is so compact, you’ll benefit from considerable boot space, even when the roof is lowered. |
Proving that sportiness and practicality need not be mutually exclusive, the SLK-Class boasts the largest luggage compartment capacity in its class. Thanks to the vario-roof’s compact folding mechanism, the SLK can offer up to 225 litres of load space when the roof is down. With the roof up, this increases to an impressive 335 litres.

EXTERIOR
Pure automotive drama
With its wide stance, long bonnet and short rear end, the new SLK is a celebration of iconic roadster design. The distinctive upright nose stands proud of the headlamps and front wings, giving the car a powerful, purposeful look. The signature single louvre radiator grille with large central star forges a strong visual link with both the new SLS AMG and the CLS-Class.
New-look headlamps with LED technology transition into a dramatic shoulder line, which sweeps back past chrome-finned vents in the front wings – an echo of classic Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the 1950s. The rear end, featuring LED tail lights and LED indicators, houses the largest boot in this segment. On the SLK AMG Sport model line, AMG light alloy wheels, AMG bodystyling, darkened headlamps and tinted tail lights further enhance the roadster’s powerful styling. In addition, both models offer a choice of vario-roof including the panoramic roof and the ingenious Magic Sky Control version with variable transparency. |

INTERIOR
Stylish, spacious and refined
The interior of the new SLK is characterised by sporty styling and outstanding craftsmanship.
The new look dashboard is a perfect balance of form and function, featuring large round dials, a full colour display, and four distinctive chrome air inlets – a nod to the SLS AMG supercar. For the ultimate motorsport feel, red needles on the instrument dials sweep around when starting up. Comfort levels are exceptional with generous elbow room and extensive seat adjustment. High-grade materials range from brushed aluminium to optional trim elements in high-gloss Dark Brown Walnut or high-gloss Black Ash. The SLK AMG Sport model comes with leather upholstery as standard and a full Nappa leather interior is also available. Other highlights include a Nappa leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel with sports-style flattened bottom section. |

MERCEDES BENZ SLK SERIESDRIVING DYNAMICS
The SLK-Class offers three direct-injection petrol engines that blend exhilarating performance with exceptional efficiency. Thanks to measures such as ECO Start/Stop on all models, they are up to 25 per cent more economical than their predecessors.
4-cylinder options include the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY, which achieves up to 43.5 mpg combined when coupled with optional 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission. CO2 emissions are as low as 151 g/km with Benefit in Kind from 17 per cent.
The more powerful SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY is equipped with 7G-Tronic Plus as standard and returns up to 42.8 mpg combined. From a standing start it can reach 62 mph in 6.6 seconds.
Finally, there’s the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, an all-new V6 unit that produces 306 hp and powers from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.6 seconds. Also fitted with 7G-Tronic Plus and featuring the latest 3rd generation spray-guided direct injection, it returns a remarkable 39.8 mpg combined.
Model | Years | 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration (second) | Top speed |
---|---|---|---|
SLK 200 | 2011– | 7.0 | 240 km/h (150 mph) |
SLK 200 automatic | 2011– | 7.0 | 237 km/h (147 mph) |
SLK 250 automatic | 2011– | 6.6 | 243 km/h (151 mph) |
SLK 350 automatic | 2011– | 5.6 | 250 km/h (160 mph) |
SLK 55 AMG automatic | 2012- | 4.6 | 250 km/h (160 mph) |
With a choice of three suspension set-ups, the new SLK offers a rewarding, engaging driving experience without ever compromising comfort. Conventional multi-link steel suspension comes as standard, while the optional sports suspension has harder springs and dampers (standard on AMG Sport).
Alternatively, drivers can opt for the Dynamic Handling package featuring suspension with continuous adjustable damping. Lowered by 10 mm, it has an electronically controlled fully automatic damping system that continuously adapts to the road surface and conditions. For optimum flexibility, suspension can be switched from the firmer “Sport” setting to the more luxurious “Comfort” setting at the touch of a button.

Both the SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY and the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY come equipped with new 7G-Tronic Plus as standard. This efficiency-optimised version of our acclaimed 7-speed automatic transmission offers reduced shift times, dynamic response and outstanding fuel economy. For example, the SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY can return up to 42.8 mpg combined, with ECO Start/Stop making a significant contribution to energy savings.
The SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY features a 6-speed manual transmission, which also offers efficient shift times and ECO Start/Stop. For enhanced economy, 7G-Tronic Plus can be specified as an option, resulting in CO2 as low as 151 g/km and achieving up to 43.5 mpg.
Equipped with rack-and-pinion steering as standard, the SLK delivers a hugely rewarding driving experience with deft, agile handling. It’s efficient too, with the ECO power steering pump operating on demand to help save fuel during straight-line driving.
To further enhance agility, Direct-Steer is available as a stand-alone option or as part of the Dynamic Handling package. This ingenious, purely mechanical system features an innovative variable ratio steering rack, which enables around 25 per cent fewer turns of the wheel from lock to lock.
On winding country roads Direct-Steer provides superb touch and response. At higher speeds, straight-line stability is outstanding. And at low speeds – when parking, for example – steering is simply effortless.
As with any Mercedes-Benz vehicle, safety is a priority so the SLK incorporates a crash-optimised steering column. In a frontal collision, it slides in the direction of the engine compartment, reducing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
For security, an electric anti-theft steering lock is also fitted as standard.

MERCEDES BENZ SLK SERIES
Engine Generation
DE18LA
This is the last version of M271 engine family. Dimensions are the same as E18ML and DE18ML, but the supercharger has been replaced with a turbocharger; like the DE18ML it uses the CGI gasoline direct injection. Output ranges from 156 PS (115 kW) at 5200 rpm to 204 PS (150 kW) at 5500 rpm.
Applications:
2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W204) C 180 CGI, C 200 CGI, C 250 CGI
2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W212) E 200 CGI, E 250 CGI
2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé (C207) E 250 CGI
2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK (R172) SLK 200 SLK250
M276
The Mercedes-Benz M276 engine is a direct injected, V6 gasoline automotive piston engine.
The M276 engine is related to the Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine, with which it shares its basic architecture, as it was developed while Chrysler was still owned by Daimler AG. This can be seen in its 60 degree vee-angle, as opposed to the 90 degree angle of its M272 predecessor. The 60 degree vee-angle eliminates the need for a balance shaft, improving refinement while reducing mechanical complexity.
The M276 engine features an aluminum engine block and dual overhead camshafts with independent variable valve timing on intake and exhaust valves and a new timing chain arrangement. The M276 also includes direct injection with piezo-electrically controlled injectors for more precise fuel delivery, multi-spark ignition that allows for multiple ignition events during the combustion stroke, and modified accessories (such as the fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, and alternator) that reduce parasitic loads. These features are also shared with Mercedes' M278 V8 engine, announced at the same time.
Mercedes-Benz claim that the new engine, in conjunction with vehicle modifications such as a stop-start system, can produce up to a 24% improvement in fuel economy while increasing power and torque over the M272.
There has been one variant of the M276 engine announced so far.
This version has a displacement of 3.5 liters (3499 cc) with a bore of 92.9 mm and stroke of 86 mm. Output is 306 hp (225 kW) at 6500 rpm with 273 ft·lbf (370 N·m) of torque at 3500-5250 rpm
M157
The M157 engine will replace the previous M156 in most of the AMG lineup. Despite the 5.5 liter displacement, all models are designated "63" for marketing purposes.
The third variant, designated M152, is a naturally-aspirated derivative of the M157 engine, sharing the same displacement, direct injection, and many other features. The M152 engine includes a variable displacement system for improved fuel economy (up to 30 percent better than the preceding M113 engine). Output is 415 hp at 6800 rpm, with 390 ft·lbf of torque at 4500 rpm.

7G Transmissions Range
7G-Tronic 7G-Tronic is Mercedes-Benz's trademark name for its seven-speed automatic transmission. This fifth-generation transmission was introduced in the Autumn of 2003 on 8-cylinder models, and was the first seven-speed automatic transmission ever used on a production vehicle. The 7G-Tronic debuted on five different eight-cylinder models: the E500, S430, S500, CL500, and SL500. It is also available on some six-cylinder models including the new 320 CDI engines which uses a VTG turbocharged common rail diesel engine. However, all V12-powered cars such as the S600 and S65 AMG still retain the 5G-Tronic, which has a torque capacity of 796 lb·ft (1,079 N·m), as the newer 7G-Tronic is limited to 542 lb·ft (735 N·m), not enough to handle the torque from the V12 engine. Also, while rear-wheel drive W211 E-Class cars have adapted the 7G-Tronic, these with 4MATIC retain the five-speed automatic, although the next-generation W212 E-Class released for the 2010 model year adopted 7G-Tronic all across the lineup including 4MATIC. The company claims that the 7G-Tronic can save up to 0.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers (depending on the car) and has shorter acceleration times and quicker intermediate sprints than the outgoing 5-speed automatic transmission. The 7G-Tronic has two reverse gear ratios: 3.416 and 2.231. The winter mode, also recently named 'comfort' mode, starts out in 2nd forward and 2nd reverse. The transmission can skip gears when downshifting, allowing for quicker acceleration. It also has a lockup torque converter on all seven gears, allowing better transmission of torque for improved acceleration. The transmission's case is made ofmagnesium, a first for the industry, to save weight. The 7G-Tronic is the fifth-generation transmission for Mercedes-Benz. About 65 percent of Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans, wagons, and sport coupes are purchased with automatic transmissions (with that figure rising). However, about 88 percent ofMercedes-Benz E-Class sedans and wagons are purchased with automatic transmissions, and automatic transmissions are standard on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 7G-Tronic transmission is built at the Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart-Untertuerkheim plant in Germany, the site of Daimler-Benz's original production facility. The 7G-Tronic is currently available on the SsangYong Chairman W. In July 2009, Mercedes-Benz announced they are working on a new nine-speed automatic. |
