The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series debuted on October 14, 2011 in Munich. The model is expected to arrive in showrooms in February 2012. Its exterior is influenced by the F01 7 Series and especially the F10 5 Series. The saloon, wagon, coupé, and convertible body styles will return. There is also expected to be a five-door hatchback version with a coupé-like style similar to the 5 Series Gran Turismo, and this will slot between the 3 Series wagon and the X3 crossover, replacing the outgoing BMW Compact as a hatchback version of the 3-series.
Technology currently available in the 7 Series and 5 Series is expected to feature in the 2012 3 Series, such as a lane-departure warning system, night vision, a system to prevent the driver from falling asleep, and radar-based adaptive cruise control with collision-mitigating automatic braking.
The 2012 3 Series is expected to be powered by a new family of aluminum four-cylinder petrol engines ranging from 135 to 245 horsepower. These will include new technologies such as variable intake and exhaust-valve timing, sequential turbochargers, and direct fuel injection. The 245 hp (183 kW; 248 PS) four-cylinder may be included in US-bound models (the last four-cylinder 3 series was the 1999 318ti with a 138 hp (103 kW; 140 PS) engine)., .The N52 3.0L naturally aspirated I6 may be replaced by the N20 with almost equivalent output. The other petrol engines will be four-cylinder turbocharged units displacing either 1.6 or 2.0 litres. High-performance diesels will also feature, 2.0 litres twin turbo versions with a 204 hp (152 kW; 207 PS) 323d, a 245 hp (183 kW; 248 PS) 325d and a 306 hp (228 kW; 310 PS) 335d 3.0 litre, inline 6 version. There will also be a hybrid version which augments the transmission with two electric motors and expected fuel savings of 20 percent, a similar powertrain that will be found in the upcoming X5 hybrid, developed in a joint venture with GM, Chrysler, and Daimler. The new 3 Series will make its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2012 and will be on sale in February 2012.
New F30 saloon is 93 mm (3.7 in) longer, 6 mm (0.2 in) wider (42 mm including mirrors) and 8 mm (0.3 in) taller than its predecessor (E90). The wheelbase is longer by 50 mm (2.0 in). Also boot space is bigger by 20 litres (0.71 cu ft). Even though the new 3 Series is bigger and has more standard equipment than its predecessors, it is lighter than the model it replaces. For example new 328i has the same weight as outgoing 325i, new 335i is 25 kilograms (55 lb) lighter than outgoing 335i.
Powertrains
Naturally aspirated straight-six engines from 325i/330i are replaced by BMW's new N20 turbocharged inline-four two liter engine already introduced in a lot of BMW models. Top of the range 335i has the same N55 engine as E90. Diesel powertrain is still two liter inline-four N47 engine which is optimized for new car.
Gearbox
Available gearbox in new 3 Series are the same as in 1 Series. 6-speed manual as standard and the 8-speed automatic ZF-8HP made by ZF Friedrichshafen is optional.

ECO PRO Mode.
ECO PRO Mode helps you to drive especially efficiently. As soon as you select the consumption-friendly ECO PRO Mode fitted as standard using the Driving Experience Control, the intelligent system goes into action and – depending on your individual driving characteristics – enables you to reduce fuel consumption.
ECO PRO Mode gears everything towards maximum reduction of consumption: accelerator pedal and gearbox parameters as well as shift points are all optimised. The heating/climate control strategy is adapted to achieve optimum consumption. On the Control Display you can read how ECO PRO Mode is actively lowering energy consumption.
ECO PRO tips advise you on how to drive more efficiently – it m ay for example recommend that you accelerate moderately. Which saving potentials are implemented is for you, the driver, to decide. Following the ECO PRO tips will enable you to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20%*. The bonus range in the on-board computer shows you exactly how many additional kilometres you can now drive. If you’re curious to find out how efficiently you are driving with the ECO PRO Mode, you can simply take a look at the consumption history. The Efficiencytainment displays also show which technological innovations are currently being employed to improve efficiency. You can thus see when Brake Energy Regeneration is operating and when the Auto Start Stop function is active. *Determined as part of an internal BMW consumption study.
BMW TwinPower Turbo engines.
To coincide with the market launch of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, four high-torque, low-consumption engines are available, which all work with modern BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. They are the powerful heart in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan.
The modern and lively 2.0-litre engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology is the strongest power unit in a new generation of four-cylinder spark ignition engines, which are technologically derived from the award-winning six-cylinder petrol engine. As part of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, they have been systematically designed for enhanced driving dynamics while at the same reducing fuel consumption and emission figures.
Also employed in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is the established 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel, which offers an undiminished high output but now performs even more cost-efficiently and with fewer emissions. The engine with aluminium composite crankcase sets standards in many respects and combines the latest generation of common-rail direct injection with a turbocharger, including variable turbine geometry. As a result, the BMW 328i with 180 kW (245 hp) accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of 149 g/km. The BMW 335i with 225 kW (306 hp) only needs 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres and achieves a CO2 value of 172 grams per kilometre. Equipped with the new 8-speed automatic transmission, the BMW 320d has an output of 135 kW and uses only 4.4 to 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres while achieving a CO2 value of 117 g/km. Thanks to additional special BMW EfficientDynamics features, the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics with 120kW (163 hp) achieves a CO2 value of 109 g/km and a fuel consumption of 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres, whether equipped with manual or automatic transmission. (Figures in accordance with EU test cycle, dependent upon the selected tyre format (include range according to technical data).
Sports mode.
BMW 3 Series Sedan optional Sports mode. make engine and driving dynamics react even more directly, allowing you an enhanced sports driving style.
Sports mode is activated using the Driving Experience Control fitted as standard in the central console. Through a predefined setup and according to the equipment selected, it results in a considerably more sporting adjustment of the drive and suspension – compared with the standard settings. The engine responds more spontaneously. In combination with the automatic transmission, shift points have considerably more sporting character.
In combination with the Adaptive M suspension, the chassis has a far more athletic setting. If variable sports steering is chosen, the assistance from power steering is reduced, which ensures a more direct feeling of steering control.
Adaptive M suspension.
The optional Adaptive M suspension provides further reinforcement for the dynamic driving characteristics of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and exploits their visual effect to the full, without comprising in any way on comfort.
In the optional Adaptive M suspension, a lowering of the chassis by ten millimetres and electronically controlled dampers result in increased agility. During the journey, sensors continuously measure data and control the shock absorber valves in the Adaptive M suspension according to the driving situation and road profile. This takes place for each wheel individually so that optimum road holding is guaranteed at all times.
An electronic control unit processes information on wheel, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, on vehicle speed as well as on steering wheel position in order to adapt the damper parameters to the road profile and driving situation. In addition to this, the driver can individually alter the setting of the suspension to increase comfort or sporting character via the Driving Experience Control.
BMW xDrive.
The optional BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system enhances traction, directional stability and safety. And particularly so when adverse conditions call for more power to be applied to the road. For the new BMW 3 Series, xDrive will be available as from the third quarter of 2012.
The BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system detects any oversteering or understeering before they even start. Within a tenth of a second it distributes up to 100% of the engine power to the front or rear axle via the transmission and an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch before returning to the normal 40:60 distribution ratio.
With the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system each axle uses its traction to the maximum. Whether in tight corners, during hill starts, on slippery surfaces through rain and leaves or on snow-covered carriageways, the optimum amount of power reaches the road. Your BMW provides stable acceleration in every situation – even out of bends. With BMW xDrive your vehicle exploits the benefits of rear-wheel drive to the full: precise handling, optimum cornering and a clear separation between the engine and steering.
8-speed automatic transmission.
The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the 8-speed automatic transmission not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. The transmission can be combined with all power units, including entry-level engines.

Exterior design.
The new BMW 3 Series Sedan systematically continues the design tradition and features of the BMW brand. The sportingly elegant exterior creates the effect of coming from one single mould and conveys aesthetics and dynamics at first sight. Even in its sixth generation, the most frequently sold BMW vehicle in the world sets standards.
Inspired by a rich model history, the heart of the BMW brand appears in a modern and powerful design – always convincing with its BMW-typical proportions. Combined with the headlights, the striking BMW kidney grille forms a harmonious unit and follows on from the front design of earlier models, thus emphasising the breadth and sporting character of the vehicle. For the first time, itexploits the full effect of the kidney grille from the side.
A view from the side highlights the precise contours. Extended, ascending lines stretch the vehicle optically, giving it enhanced dynamic character. Interior design.
The interior of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan impresses with its high-quality selection of materials. It encloses the driver with classical driver guidance, creating a cockpit feeling. Skilful space design gives optimum access to all the important control functions on the instrument display.
The instrument panel opens up to the driver and allows convenient access to the controls. All the design lines converge in one point behind the steering wheel, thus directing the driver’s view fully onto the road.
On the driver’s side of the deliberately asymmetrically designed centre console, a change from decorative surface and grain optically highlights the driver’s section of the interior. On the front passenger side, an elegant atmosphere is created by the instrument panel that displays the decorative trim giving it an ornamental effect. The new BMW 3 Series Sedan with Sport Line promises unbridled dynamics and sets clear visual accents. Its striking design features in high-gloss black reinforce its sporting appearance.
Eight boldly designed kidney grille slats in high-gloss black produce an especially athletic effect for the front end. Embedded in a chromium-coloured frame, the BMW kidney grille appears even larger. In the front apron, black air inlets with aluminium-coloured horizontal bars emulate the dynamic shape of the headlights and otwardly emphasise the muscular wheel housings. This is where, depending on the model, 17-inch or 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design create the sporting impression – while retaining the visual lightness. New details are starting to emerge about the 2014 BMW M3 as Auto Express recently sat down for an interview with Dr Friedrich Nitschke - the managing director of M GmbH.
The executive was reluctant to discuss specifics, but said the next-generation M3 would have a "bigger focus on very low fuel consumption." That's a tad vague, but the magazine says the car will feature a tri-turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine with approximately 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS). Additionally, we can expect aggressive styling and a lightweight body that adopts carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.
Besides talking about the M3, Nitschke revealed a Z4 M is "something we could do easily" and an M1 revival is possible. More interestingly, Auto Express says a 1-Series M CSL is under development and could draw inspiration from the tii concept.

The N20 is a turbocharged straight-4 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in 2011 in the new BMW X1 xDrive28i. It is BMW's first straight-4 engine that combines the use of BMW TwinPower turbo technology, high precision direct injection, turbocharging according to the Twin Scroll principle, double VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control. The N20 engine is a part of EfficientDynamics and it will replace the six-cylinder N52 and N53 engines with BMW X1 xDrive28i being the first model to feature this engine . Engine is all aluminium and is lighter and more compact than a six-cylinder engine of equivalent power. On April 20, 2011 BMW announced BMW Z4 sDrive28i model which will use new N20 engine.

The N55 is a turbocharged straight-6 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in early 2009 in the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo in the BMW 535i GT model. It is BMW's first production single turbocharged gasoline engine that combines the use of Valvetronic, turbocharging, Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), and direct injection technologies.

The N55 was the first engine to receive the BMW TwinPower Turbo brand name, although it actually uses a single turbocharger, with twin scroll Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) technology taking in exhaust pulses from two groups of 3 cylinders. Valvetronic is used to help reduce throttle losses. BMW has also retroactively applied the "Twin Turbo" moniker to earlier engines such as the N54 straight-6 and N63 V8 which have twin turbochargers but not twin scroll technology. The S63 V8 (the high-performance M derivative of the N63) and N74 V12 have twin turbochargers and twin scroll technology.
The N55 has replaced the N54 in many applications as well as supplanting the high output versions of the N52B30. The preceding N54 was a twin-turbocharged straight-6 with direct injection technology that did not use Valvetronic. The N55 has reduced emissions and fuel consumption in keeping with BMW's Efficient Dynamics initiative.
The N55 is mated to ZF's new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic in most applications, though the 2011 BMW 3-Series will instead use the 6-speed automatic with Steptronic, and a 6-speed manual is usually available for cars (sedans, coupes, wagons) but not crossover SUVs.
