Summary
| |||
The sixth generation of the 5-Series (BMW F10) made its debut on 23 November 2009 as a 2010 model. The platform is based on the F01 7 Series; improvements include a front dual ball joint short-long arm suspension (replacing the MacPherson strut suspensions BMW previously used), and a rear multilink suspension.
For the powertrain, there is a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the single turbo inline-6 N55, and the twin-turbo V8 N63.
It is designed by P.H. McFlagger, with a more prominent upright split kidney grille and the absence of the "Bangle butt" rear-end styling of its E60 predecessor. Externally, the car is a more traditionalBMWesque design; a far more sober effort after the highly controversial E60. Although it bears some resemblance to the E60 with the wide kidney grilles and a very pronounced Hofmeister kink, the creases in the bonnet and just underneath the door are clearly related to the E39 and other earlier 5 series models. Inside marks the return of the centre console being clearly angled towards the driver, another marked change from its immediate predecessor which was noted for its non traditional BMW design. However, opinion is divided, as a reviewer described the F10 as too bland and conservative, compared to the E60 predecessor, as well as having too much of a resemblance to the E90 3-Series.
[F10/F11 (2011-)
Powertrain
The F10 has, for the European market at least, a choice of seven engines: the N63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 topping the range in the 550i, followed by a trio of straight-6 petrols. BMW has retained, for the time being at least, a trio of straight-6 engines, completing the petrol engine range. Straight six engines offer superior refinement over their four-cylinder counterparts, as well as being the trademark BMW engine which has featured in many of the company's most successful cars: the E28 and E34 M5, E36 and E46 M3, plus the iconic BMW E26 M1.
The 535i has the 302 bhp (225 kW)/295 lb ft(400 N m) BMW N55 engine which made its debut in the F07 5-series GT, and will shortly find its way into the face-lifted BMW E92 and E93.As before there are two naturally aspirated straight-6 engines; for North America the Valvetronic N52B30 3.0 litres, 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) for the 528i; and in Europe the direct gasoline injection N53 3.0 litres, 258 PS (190 kW; 254 hp) for the 528i, and 3.0 litres and 204 bhp (152 kW; 207 PS) for the 523i, same outputs as the BMW E89 Z4 sDrive23i. In most parts of South East Asia, the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated straight-6 gasoline N52T engine is fitted to the 523i, providing the same power output as the 3.0-litre variant at 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp) but slightly lower torque at 250 N·m (180 lb·ft). Another 2.5-litre straight-six engine is available in China. This engine produces 177 PS (130 kW; 175 hp) and 230 N·m (170 lb·ft) of torque.
The five petrol engines are complemented by three diesel engines. Despite rumours to the contrary, BMW only offers one four-cylinder engine, the 520d. This means that the 525d continues to offer the superior mechanical refinement of a straight six as opposed to the rumoured 523d with four cylinders. The 525d is joined by a 530d; both models use the same BMW N57 3.0-litre engine, the 525d has 204 hp (152 kW) and 450 N m, the 530d with 245 hp (183 kW) and 540 N·m of torque.
There will be a choice of a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox for all engines. In North America, the 8-speed automatic is standard equipment, with the 6-speed manual being a no-cost option for the 535i and 550i.
xDrive is presently available on the 535i, 550i and the 530d, and for the first time is not available for the entry-level North American model (2011 BMW 528i).
The 2012 BMW 528i will swap its Valvetronic N52B30 3.0 litre 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) inline-6 for the new N20 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 which will produce 240 hp (179 kW) at 5000 rpm and 260 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque from 1250 rpm, and this makes the entire North American 5 Series lineup powered by turbocharged gasoline engines. xDrive will be optional with the 2012 528i.Powertrain updates are officialy introduced on August 16, 2011 on BMW site. 520i/528i gets N20 inline-4 turbo, 530i remains only naturally aspirated powered 5 series with 3 litre BMW N53 engine. 535i/550i remains the same. Diesel models are also updated, 520d gets Efficient Dynamics Edition while 525d produce 218 hp. 530d has 13 hp more which results in 258 hp and 535d gets engine from 640d model which results in 313 hp. xDrive is available with 528i, 535i, 550i, 525d, 530d and 535d models.
There is a long wheel base version of the BMW 5 series which is extended by 5.5 inches and includes a high-comfort rear seat bench developed specifically for this model, Four-zone automatic air conditioning, rear-seat entertainment, and electrically adjustable sunblinds on the rear side windows and a folding table integrated in the backrest of the front passenger’s seat. This model was originally meant to be assembled at BMW's Shenyang, China for the Chinese market only to be used as a chauffered limo type vehicle as an alternative to the larger more expensive 7 series, the but the BMW Mexico plant in Toluca, Mexico also manufactures this model for the Mexican market due to the recent increase in demand for luxury vehicles in Mexico. As of 2011 this model is only available in the Chinese and Mexican markets.

Interior design.
"In the interior dynamics and elegance are represented in one flowing movement from the instrument panel to the door. This can instantly be felt. All of the high-quality control elements are ergonomically positioned for a perfect fit as soon as you take a seat." Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design

Exterior design.
"If a vehicle doesn't look dynamic how are we supposed to believe that it drives dynamically? You have to be able to both see and feel its character. It's the same with talent: It's not enough just to have it, you have to be able to use it." Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design

ECO PRO Mode.
The ECO PRO Mode supports you in achieving a particularly efficient driving style. As soon as you select the consumption-friendly ECO PRO Mode using Driving Experience Control incl. ECO PRO, the intelligent system goes into action and – depending on your individual driving style – enables you to reduce fuel consumption.
The ECO PRO Mode gears everything towards maximum efficiency: accelerator pedal and gearbox parameters as well as shift points are all optimized and the heating/air-conditioning strategy is adapted intelligently.
The Control Display indicates how the ECO PRO Mode is actively reducing energy consumption, e.g. through Brake Energy Regeneration or the Auto Stop Start function. What is more, ECO PRO Info on more efficient driving shows information such as the optimum choice of gear at any point in time. Which saving potentials are implemented is for you, the driver, to decide. Following ECO PRO Info makes it possible to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20%*. The Bonus Range in the on-board computer shows you exactly how many additional kilometres you can now drive. *Determined as part of an internal BMW consumption study. The ECO PRO Mode is not available for the BMW 550i and BMW 550i xDrive.
Eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic.
The most comfortable way to save: the eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption.
Only the tachometer will reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic shifts gears. The additional gears reduce the engine's rev interval between shifts, so the transmission process is barely noticeable. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength and efficiency.
The eighth gear reduces the number of revolutions at high speeds, tangibly increasing comfort while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The system is supported by the newly developed and more efficient converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever to change gear manually.
Driving Experience Control.
How would you like to drive today? Driving Experience Control, fitted as standard, makes the difference. Adapt your BMW 5 Series Sedan to meet your needs – or those of your passengers.
A touch of the Driving Experience Control next to the gearshift lever changes the level of driving pleasure from COMFORT to SPORT: the engine responds more spontaneously to the accelerator and the eight-speed transmission Steptronic lets the engine rev high before quickly changing up a gear. At the same time the steering and chassis tighten. Touch the paddle again to enter the SPORT + mode where the Dynamic Stability Control allows controlled drifting to the limit.
The currently active mode is permanently displayed underneath the speedometer, and in the SPORT mode the drive train and chassis settings can be quickly and individually configured using the iDrive Controller for dynamic driving on badly surfaced roads for example. The COMFORT+ mode is available with Dynamic Damping Control which provides both the driver and passengers with maximum comfort on longer journeys.
xDrive.
Taking the power to where it has maximum effect – a simple idea that the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive expertly masters.
Superior dynamics on every surface: xDrive is the optional all-wheel drive system which feeds engine power to both axles of the BMW 5 Series Sedan as the situation requires. Under normal circumstances on a dry road, it distributes drive power between the front and rear axles in a 40:60 ratio. Acting virtually instantaneously and in a manner so subtle as to be virtually unnoticed by the vehicle's occupants, xDrive can direct up to 100 percent of drive forces to one axle.
This intelligent system allows the driver to enjoy the vehicle's power and agility to the full because it automatically adapts to the terrain you are driving on. Whether you are on a twisting road, attempting a hill start or tackling slippery surfaces, maximum traction is guaranteed.

| |
The F10 M5 will first be released to the public in the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and is expected to go on sale in November 2011.
Prerelease information
The new M5 utilizes the S63 biturbo 4.4 Litre V8 with twin scroll turbocharging technology that is found in the BMW X5 M and X6 M, and the version in the M5 is expected to have an output of 560HP and 502 ft·lb (681 N·m) of torque. Turbocharging the M5 has not gone unnoticed, with long time fans of the M series being disappointed that BMW seems to be moving away from traditionally low displacement naturally aspirated high reving engines. Increasingly stringent international CO2 emissions and fuel consumption regulations are cited as the cause of death of the outgoing model's V10 engine, and the F10 M5 will cut CO2 emissions by 25%. The other advantage of turbocharging is that it generates considerably more low-end torque; the N63 biturbo 4.4 Litre V8 (the base engine from which the S63 is derived) has this advantage over the S85 V10 engine despite having fewer cylinders.
While the X5 M and X6 M currently have a 6-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic transmission, a dual clutch transmission will be used on the F10 M5, dropping the Getrag SMG III single-clutch 7-speed semi-automatic transmission used in the previous E60 M5. A manual transmission for the US market has not been confirmed nor denied.
The F10 M5 will be further influenced by BMW's EfficientDynamics program to lower the weight of the car. This will improve fuel consumption and enhance performance. BMW has partnered with carbon fiber manufacturers SGL group and Biermann has further speculated that carbon fiber will be employed substantially in the structure and shell to vastly reduce weight from the previous E60 model.Hybrid systems have been ruled out of the F10 M5's line up of gadgets because of the extra weight they will add to the car.

Car is build on modified F10 platform, wheelbase is shorter while body is 11 milimeters longer than standard 5 series. Other details mentioned in the report include an Active M-Differential with torque vectoring between the rear wheels and optional 20 inch light alloy wheels fitted with 265/35/20 front and 295/30/20 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. While the car’s official world debut isn’t set to occur until September at the Frankfurt Auto Show and later in North America at the LA Autoshow on November 18, the new 2012 BMW M5 has already made an appearance at the M Festival at the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race in Germany on June 23, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and has been shown to select members of the M Driving Experience at the Salzburg Ring in Germany.
Engine is officially dubbed the S63tu. It has revised compression, higher lift camshafts, individual throttle bodies for added response and higher boost at 22 psi (1.5 bar) compared to the S63 unit found in the X5/X6M. The compression has also been raised and the pistons have been strengthened to cope with the added boost and compression. Redline has been raised to 7200 and continues to build power up to redline, compared to other turbo cars which lose power as the RPM increases. The brake calipers will be colored blue and standard for all M5s at release. 19 inch multi spoke wheels are standard and 20 inch spilt 5 spoke wheels will also be available at launch

The BMW N53 is BMW's 14th generation production straight 6 engine, released in 2007 in the facelifted BMW 5 Series (E60/E61) and the BMW 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93). It is an improvement on the N52 Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine mainly since it has gasoline direct injection technology and can burn stratified. However, unlike its predecessor, it does not contain BMW's Valvetronic technology due to space limitations in the cylinder head.BMW does not plan to put the N53 engine for sale in Australian and North American models due to the high sulphur content of the fuel available in these markets.
The N53 makes use of HPI: High Precision Injection or Direct Injection, which consists of Piëzo-electric injectors directly in the cylinder.
The N53B30-O0 has improved maximum power to 272 bhp (203 kW) as well as maximum torque over the N52B30. The N53B30-O0 can be found in the 330i (E90/E91/E92/E93) and 530i (E60/E61).
The 325i (E90/E91/E92) switched from the N52B25-OL (2.5-litre) to the N53B30-U0 (3.0-litre) in September 2007 (March 2007 for the E93). Despite the increased displacement, the maximum power remained unchanged, and maximum torque has increased just enough to compensate for a longer differential final drive ratio as a result of a shorter useful range (maximum power is given in the N53B30-U0 at only 640 rad/s instead of the 700 rad/s of the older N52B25-OL). The N53B30-U0 can also be found in the present 525i (E60/E61).
The 2.5-litre N53B25-U0 can be found in the present 523i (E60/E61).
U0 subcoded engines seem to be crippled versions of their equivalent displacement O0 versions as they share all internal dimensions and technology.

The N55 is a turbocharged straight-6 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in early 2009 in the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo in the BMW 535i GT model. It is BMW's first production single turbocharged gasoline engine that combines the use of Valvetronic, turbocharging, Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), and direct injection technologies.
The N55 was the first engine to receive the BMW TwinPower Turbo brand name, although it actually uses a single turbocharger, with twin scroll Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) technology taking in exhaust pulses from two groups of 3 cylinders. Valvetronic is used to help reduce throttle losses. BMW has also retroactively applied the "Twin Turbo" moniker to earlier engines such as the N54 straight-6 and N63 V8 which have twin turbochargers but not twin scroll technology. The S63 V8 (the high-performance M derivative of the N63) and N74 V12 have twin turbochargers and twin scroll technology.
The N55 has replaced the N54 in many applications as well as supplanting the high output versions of the N52B30. The preceding N54 was a twin-turbocharged straight-6 with direct injection technology that did not use Valvetronic. The N55 has reduced emissions and fuel consumption in keeping with BMW's Efficient Dynamics initiative.
The N55 is mated to ZF's new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic in most applications, though the 2011 BMW 3-Series will instead use the 6-speed automatic with Steptronic, and a 6-speed manual is usually available for cars (sedans, coupes, wagons) but not crossover SUVs.
Applications:
2010– BMW 535i GT, BMW 535i
2011– BMW 335i Coupé, BMW 335i Sedan, BMW X5 xDrive 35i, BMW X6 xDrive 35i, BMW 535i, BMW 135i, BMW X3 xDrive35i
2012– BMW 640i Coupé

The S63 is tuned version of the N63 engine by BMW's Motorsport division. It is found in the BMW X5M, BMW X6M, the high performance derivatives of BMW's Sports Activity Series crossovers, and the BMW M5 sport sedan. The S63 features Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (cc). Engine is rated 555 PS (408 kW; 547 hp) at 6000 rpm and 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) at 1500-5650 rpm.
Using BMW's innovative "M Twin Power Turbo" engine with high precision Direct Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin-scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized. The goals: virtually eliminate turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion efficiency and power output. Tremendous power and performance are delivered by the engine in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M through a new reverse flow design and construction principle.
The new M V8 engine with twin-scroll twin turbo technology uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned-length runners, incorporating both cylinder banks and connecting cylinders in carefully selected pairs. This configuration, patented by BMW M and known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold () (check this in Product Library), offers lightning-quick response, a linear build-up of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the twin turbochargers with a “charge pulse” at approximately every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional “irregular schedule” of charging.
The managed flow of exhaust gas provided by the Cylinder bank Comprehensive Manifold ensures high-velocity flow of combustion gases. The appropriate separation of exhaust gas flow from different cylinders is maintained until the gas reaches the turbine wheel, spooling the two twin-scroll turbochargers without back-pressure. With maximum boost pressure, the use of twin-scroll twin turbo technology and the patented exhaust manifold allows complete exploitation of the benefits of turbocharging.
On the X5 M and X6 M, the S63 engine is mated to a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and xDrive four-wheel drive.
For the F10 BMW M5 sedan, a variant known as the S63B44Tü has been tuned for an additional 5 more horsepower and makes 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) of torque available to 5750 rpm compared to 5650 rpm in SUV M models. The M5's engine produces 560 hp (418 kW; 568 PS) from 6000 to 7000 rpm while redline is at 7200 rpm. Compared to the regular S63, the S63 TU has the addition of throttleless Valvetronic induction control, larger turbos and intercoolers, different injectors and control electronics, and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1. On the BMW M5 (F10) engine is matted on 7 speed dual clutch transmission, dropping the Getrag SMG III single-clutch semi-automatic transmission used in the previous E60 M5 for Getrag 7DCI700 (same transmission is also found in E92 M3 DKG).
Applications:
2010– E70 X5 M
2010– E71 X6 M
2012– F10 M5
