The BMW E70 is the development name for the current X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). It replaced the BMW X5 (E53) in November 2006. It is manufactured alongside the new, 2008 BMW X6 at BMW'sGreer, South Carolina plant in the USA and BMW's facility in Toluca, Mexico.

The xDrive AWD system updates previewed in the facelifted X5 have continued with further detail improvements for the E70. It uses a double wishbone suspension at the front. The manual transmission is entirely dropped, leaving only the automatic transmission.
The E70 features many new technological advancements for this class as standard equipment including BMW's iDrive system, electronic 'joystick' gearshift (no mechanical connection to the gearbox to win space in the console), LED taillamps, the first ever all-polypropylene single module fender module,[and options such as head-up display HUD, active steering, active damping, and Dynamic Drive which uses active anti-roll bars which use a hydraulic servo in the middle to actively counteract body roll.
The interior of the new, larger, X5 is completely new. It has a large center-mounted display screen and the simplified iDrive, a man-machine interface system also found in the rest of the BMW model range. The E70 further incorporates many comfort options such as a glass panorama-roof, and, for the first time in a BMW, an optional third row seat which has increased the seating capacity in E70 to 7 passengers, addressing criticism of the E53 model which had been regarded as being slightly too small for this market segment.
The E70 is also the first production vehicle to use FlexRay, a new extremely fast electrical bus system; it is only used for the control of the chassis damping system. The new 'joy-stick'-style electronic space-saving shifter has since been adopted in the new 2008 BMW 5 Series. Also, BMW upgraded the rear suspension and springs for the 2008 cars. The earlier 2006 and 2007 models had a 'bumps' problem on the road, so BMW did an upgrade to address this as of the model 2008. The 2008 X5 handles now handles this better than the previous years.
For the 2010 model year the X5 received the new iDrive system and the BMW individual audio system along with various other minor updates.

2010/2011 X5 "Life Cycle Impulse" (LCI) Changes
2011 BMW X5 xDrive35d
In 2010 the X5 underwent a "Life Cycle Impulse" (LCI) update, debuted at the New York Auto show in April 2010 and introduced as 2011 models in BMW North America markets. The changes included revised styling, primarily of the front and rear bumpers, air intakes and headlights as well as new exterior and interior colors and new options combination.
More significantly, a new range of engines, all turbocharged and with direct injection was introduced. In the North American market, available gasoline power trains are the xDrive 35i twin-scroll turbo six cylinder and the xDrive50i twin turbo V8, both coupled to an eight-speed automatic Steptronic transmission. These petrol engines are more powerful and lighter than their predecessors, with the 35i also providing improved fuel mileage and reduced emissions. The xDrive 35d turbo diesel carries over in the NA market with the six-speed transmission unchanged from the previous model year. The xDrive40d was also introduced along with a revised xDrive30d, but neither are currently available in the North American market.
The X5M engine and transmission remains the same.

Interior design.

Its elegance impresses, its function inspires. Intelligently positioned storage compartments and the ergonomically designed instrument panel provide user-friendly solutions to all of your needs. BMW iDrive is intuitively operated using the centrally positioned controller and Control Display to give you fast and simple access to all of the comfort and entertainment functions.
The optional and innovative Head-Up Display shows relevant information, for example current speed, directly in the driver's field of vision. The height and brightness of the display can be individually adjusted, so that the driver can fully concentrate on the traffic at all times. |
Exterior design.
Heading towards the sunset or illuminated by city lights: the BMW X5 instinctively draws gazes wherever it goes. Its long wheelbase, short overhangs and powerful contours express its elegantly sporting nature.
Prominent lines and sculpted edges are testament to the BMW X5's unmistakable presence and elegance. The front apron is almost entirely in body colour, and the dominant air vents and elegant matt-silver finished mouldings direct the viewer's attention to its wide stance on the road. The muscular, sculpted bonnet is a clear indication of the power that lies beneath while the dynamically contoured sides and L-shape rear lights with LED technology underscore the vehicle's elegance. The front and rear matt-aluminium finished scuff guards and the newly designed exhaust pipes complete the athletic and powerful appearance of the BMW X5's exterior. Whether captured under city lights or beams of sunlight, the design of sporting intent has never been so intensive.

Active Steering.
Because no two bends are the same. Active Steering adapts the steering transmission and steering force to the current speed of the vehicle, thus ensuring optimum steering precision, agility and comfort.
Thanks to Active Steering, the steering ratio is always optimally adapted to fit the current driving situation. This not only results in more comfort when parking, it also means increased agility and safety when travelling at higher speeds making it a welcome companion when driving on winding roads

Adaptive Drive.
Athletic performance and comfort are no longer mutually exclusive: if desired, Adaptive Drive combines the two active chassis control systems Dynamic Drive and Dynamic Damping Control for a more relaxed driving experience.
Adaptive Drive includes an individual setting for the dampers and steering assistance in normal and sports mode. Supported by Dynamic Damping Control, Dynamic Drive ensures that active stabilisers on the front and rear axles deliver an outstandingly smooth ride and enhanced agility.

Hill Descent Control (HDC).
For a smooth and easily controlled decent when negotiating steep downhill gradients of up to 15 percent. Hill Descent Control (HDC) allows drivers to concentrate fully on steering without having to brake

Thanks to xDrive, the BMW X5 maintains perfect traction even on difficult road conditions. This intelligent system uses its Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect the early signs of instability and reacts instantly as needed.

M Sport package.
Exclusive, stylish – and unmistakably powerful: the optional M Sport package accentuates the dynamic character of the BMW X5. Bumper and running boards in body colour as well as door finisher sills with the M logo are only the first in a long line of powerful and sporting impressions.
In addition to Alpine White non-metallic, five further paint finishes are available as part of the BMW X5 M Sport package. Four extra sporting accents can be added in the form of the optional 20" M double-spoke 333 mixed tyres. 2010 BMW X5 M
The BMW X5 M is a high performance derivative of the X5. It was introduced to the press at the New York Auto Show in April 2009, and started appearing in BMW dealerships in September 2009. It competes with cars such as the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. At the time of its launch it is the world’s most powerful car in its class.
The BMW X5 M is the first xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicles from M GmbH along with the BMW X6 M, and is more conventional than its BMW X6 M sibling. The M offers the same utility as the regular X5, with the addition of the V8 M TwinPower Turbo, a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 delivering 555 bhp (414 kW; 563 PS) at 5,750 RPM and peak Torque is 501 lb·ft (679 N·m), available between 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. The S63engine is a high output variation of the N63 power unit.
The X5 M can sprint from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.7 seconds. A quarter mile (400m) time of 12.5 seconds with a trap speed of 112 mph (180.2 km/h) was recorded by Car and Driver magazine. In the same test, the X5 M bested the 0-62 mph and quarter mile times of the 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8, and the 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. In wet conditions, the X5 M went around a roundabout in 5.1 seconds, faster than the Audi Q7 V12 TDI.
Coupled with special suspension specifically optimized for M that features Adaptive Drive and the newly developed M Servotronic power steering, the performance Sport Activity Vehicle promises very competent handling. Other high-tech features include launch control for maximum acceleration and a six speed M Sport automatic transmission optimized for performance. Drivers can manually select gears using either paddles or an electronic gear selector lever. Electronically controlled, variable power distribution to the front and rear axle prevents even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right from the start, before DSC Dynamic Stability Control is even required to cut in.
The BMW X5 M features the biggest brakes on a BMW production vehicle; 15.55" (395x36mm) rotors up front clamped by four piston brake calipers, with 15.2" (385x24mm) rotors at the rear clamped by single piston brake calipers. Although traction control is standard, the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) optimizes the aggressiveness of the system. The MDM setting allows the driver to enter a controlled drift and push the vehicle’s handling to the limit.

It is a hybrid electric vehicle model featuring 2.0L 4 cylinder variable twin-turbo diesel engine rated 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp) and 400 N·m (300 lb·ft) at 2000-2250 rpm, a 15 kilowatt electric motor driven by a lithium ion battery pack, 8-speed transmission developed by BMW and ZF, roof-mounted solar panels, 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation.
It was unveiled in 2008 Geneva Auto Show.
