Summary

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover released for sale in the second quarter of 2008 by German automaker BMW. The X6 was marketed as a Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) by BMW. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (bold styling, dramatic sloping roof).

The concept model debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show and the production X6 officially debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and Montreal International Auto Show. While slightly longer and wider than the X5, it is significantly lower and seated initially only four, and since 2011, optionally five.
It is built in BMW's North American plant in Greer, South Carolina alongside the BMW X5, whose platform it shares. It is dubbed a "Sports Activity Coupé (SAC)" by BMW. A hybrid version, the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, which will be the first such vehicle from BMW, was also announced. Later, in April 2009, the sporty X6 M version was announced, with a 555 hp (414 kW) 4.4-liter turbocharged V8

Dynamic Performance Control
The X6 marks BMW's first use of its new Dynamic Performance Control system, which works in unison with xDrive all-wheel drive (both are standard on the X6). DPC is a drivetrain and chassis control system that works to regulate traction and especially correct over- and understeer by actively spreading out drive forces across the rear axle. Torque is split not only between the front and rear wheels (xDrive) but also from side to side at the rear for improved agility and added stability (through the DPC rear axle).
The DPC differential features clutch packs on both output sides that are actuated by an electric motor. The clutch pack activates a planetary gearset which causes one wheel to be overdriven. A conventional control system will use the brakes to reduce the speed of the faster moving wheel (which is the one with less traction)and reduce engine power. This leads to increased brake wear and slower than optimal progress. The DPC system speeds up the slower moving wheel (the one with the most traction) in order to maintain stability when needed. For example; while turning, the outer wheel is overdriven to provide greater acceleration using the traction advantage through the dynamic loading of the outboard wheel in cornering. In an oversteer situation, the inner wheel is overdriven to regain traction balance.

The interior of the BMW X6.
The interior of the BMW X6 accentuates an active lifestyle, with functional detail solutions crafted to the very highest standards. A wide choice of materials (like the Leather Alcantara option) and interior trim offers a broad range of high-quality combinations. The leather on the exclusive optional leather cladding for the dashboard and door panels even has special padding for enhanced haptic quality.

The eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic the BMW X6.
The rev counter is the only place you'll notice: with the new eight-speed automatic transmission the smaller increments from one gear to the next don't just increase ride and shift comfort in the BMW X6, they also enable faster gearshifts and more profitable use of the optimum rev range. This reduces fuel consumption and lowers CO2 emissions. The system is supported by the newly developed converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever to shift manually.

Dynamic Performance Control in the BMW X6.
For the first time in a BMW, Dynamic Performance Control gives the BMW X6 unique new cornering qualities. Seamless drive distribution to the left- and right-hand rear wheels improves track stability, regardless of whether the driver is accelerating or not. That means you can enter bends more precisely and cross-accelerate faster with optimised grip when you accelerate out. Together with the all-wheel xDrive system, Dynamic Performance Control delivers enhanced agility and dynamics on all surfaces.

Body rigidity: the beam distribution and
node connections of the vehicle’s highly functional body structure, and the strategic useof high-rigidity materials, result in maximum passive safety in front, lateral or rear collisions. The rigid structure also makes an essential contribution to the rewardingly dynamic drive. The rollover sensor is linked up to the
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system for better and faster recognition of dangerous situations. Should an overturn occur, the airbags and belt tensioners are immediately triggered to ensure maximum passive safety.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) enables your
BMW to take even steep downhill gradients safely and automatically – without the need for you to apply the brakes. With the speed control with braking function, you can also change your speed using the drop arm in the lower left area of the cockpit.
Hill-Start assistant stops the car rolling downhill for 1.5 seconds once the footbrake is released when making hill starts

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) incl.
DTC and enhanced functions for optimising braking and driving stability. DSC detects anyrisk of swerving and stabilises the car within fractions of a second. The traction mode subfunction (DTC) enables increased wheel slip, in order to perfectly adapt forward thrustto every situation, for a more athletic drive.

• (Optional) Adaptive Drive (Dynamic Drive and EDC)
• (Optional) Active Steering incl. Servotronic
• (Optional) Self-levelling pneumatic rear suspension
• (Optional) Glass roof, electric, tilt/slide function, convenient operation via vehicle key
• (Optional) Sport package (incl. sport seats [not available for ActiveHybrid X6] with electric adjustment, Star-spoke 258 light-alloy
wheels with mixed tyres and BMW Individual roofliner Anthracite)

Summary

BMW X6 M (2009-)
The BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M are the first xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicles from the M GmbH. The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 New York Auto Show.
The high-performance M derivative features a twin scroll twin turbo version of the 4.4-liter V8 BMW N63 engine with Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM). Engine is rated 555 PS (408 kW; 547 hp) at 6000 rpm and 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) at 1500-5650 rpm.
Other features include 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission with aluminum pull-style paddles on steering wheel, M Dynamic Mode feature, 10 mm (0.4 in) lower Adaptive Drive suspension, 4-piston fixed calipers with 15.6" rotor at front and single piston floating calipers with 15.2" rotor at rear, 20-inch alloy wheels with 275/40R20 front and 315/35R20 run flat tires, special gills in the front fenders, 20-inch light-alloy wheels.
The car can accelerate from zero to 60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 4.5 seconds and 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5 seconds.

S63
The S63 is tuned version of the N63 engine by BMW's Motorsport division. It is found in the BMW X5M, BMW X6M, the high performance derivatives of BMW's Sports Activity Series crossovers, and the BMW M5 sport sedan. The S63 features Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (cc). Engine is rated 555 PS (408 kW; 547 hp) at 6000 rpm and 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) at 1500-5650 rpm.
Using BMW's innovative "M Twin Power Turbo" engine with high precision Direct Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin-scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized. The goals: virtually eliminate turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion efficiency and power output. Tremendous power and performance are delivered by the engine in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M through a new reverse flow design and construction principle.
The new M V8 engine with twin-scroll twin turbo technology uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned-length runners, incorporating both cylinder banks and connecting cylinders in carefully selected pairs. This configuration, patented by BMW M and known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold () (check this in Product Library), offers lightning-quick response, a linear build-up of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the twin turbochargers with a “charge pulse” at approximately every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional “irregular schedule” of charging.
The managed flow of exhaust gas provided by the Cylinder bank Comprehensive Manifold ensures high-velocity flow of combustion gases. The appropriate separation of exhaust gas flow from different cylinders is maintained until the gas reaches the turbine wheel, spooling the two twin-scroll turbochargers without back-pressure. With maximum boost pressure, the use of twin-scroll twin turbo technology and the patented exhaust manifold allows complete exploitation of the benefits of turbocharging.
On the X5 M and X6 M, the S63 engine is mated to a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and xDrive four-wheel drive.
For the F10 BMW M5 sedan, a variant known as the S63B44Tü has been tuned for an additional 5 more horsepower and makes 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) of torque available to 5750 rpm compared to 5650 rpm in SUV M models. The M5's engine produces 560 hp (418 kW; 568 PS) from 6000 to 7000 rpm while redline is at 7200 rpm. Compared to the regular S63, the S63 TU has the addition of throttleless Valvetronic induction control, larger turbos and intercoolers, different injectors and control electronics, and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1. On the BMW M5 (F10) engine is matted on 7 speed dual clutch transmission, dropping the Getrag SMG III single-clutch semi-automatic transmission used in the previous E60 M5 for Getrag 7DCI700 (same transmission is also found in E92 M3 DKG).

Summary

ActiveHybrid X6 (2009-)

2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

In late 2009, BMW introduced an X6 featuring a version of the Global Hybrid Cooperation hybrid power train, popularly known as the two-mode hybrid system. This car was confirmed as being called the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and it is the world's most powerful hybrid vehicle; it will not be sold in the UK. The production vehicle was unveiled alongside a 7-series hybrid at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The ActiveHybrid X6 went on sale in December 2009 in the US market with a base price of US$89,765.
The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW (407 hp) V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric engines developing 67 kW (91 hp) and, respectively, 63 kW (86 hp.) Maximum system output is 357 kW (485 hp), peak torque is 780 Newton-meters (575 lb-ft.)
BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit from the combination of both drive modes for short periods of maximum acceleration, using the 485 maximum. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h). The hybrid also employs stop-start technology and other energy saving measures to help improve efficiency. The core-vehicle is however very heavy and the petrol power unit limits the extent to which fuel consumption can be reduced in absolute terms. The Turbo-Diesel models in the X6 range use less fuel, for example.

The N55 is a turbocharged straight-6 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in early 2009 in the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo in the BMW 535i GT model. It is BMW's first production single turbocharged gasoline engine that combines the use of Valvetronic, turbocharging, Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), and direct injection technologies.
The N55 was the first engine to receive the BMW TwinPower Turbo brand name, although it actually uses a single turbocharger, with twin scroll Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) technology taking in exhaust pulses from two groups of 3 cylinders. Valvetronic is used to help reduce throttle losses. BMW has also retroactively applied the "Twin Turbo" moniker to earlier engines such as the N54 straight-6 and N63 V8 which have twin turbochargers but not twin scroll technology. The S63 V8 (the high-performance M derivative of the N63) and N74 V12 have twin turbochargers and twin scroll technology.
The N55 has replaced the N54 in many applications as well as supplanting the high output versions of the N52B30. The preceding N54 was a twin-turbocharged straight-6 with direct injection technology that did not use Valvetronic. The N55 has reduced emissions and fuel consumption in keeping with BMW's Efficient Dynamics initiative.
The N55 is mated to ZF's new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic in most applications, though the 2011 BMW 3-Series will instead use the 6-speed automatic with Steptronic, and a 6-speed manual is usually available for cars (sedans, coupes, wagons) but not crossover SUVs.
Applications:
2010– BMW 535i GT, BMW 535i
2011– BMW 335i Coupé, BMW 335i Sedan, BMW X5 xDrive 35i, BMW X6 xDrive 35i, BMW 535i, BMW 135i, BMW X3 xDrive35i

2008-

The N63 is a family of 4.4L, direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V8 automobile engines produced by BMW since 2008.
The N63B44 features a reverse-flow air design in which the turbochargers are mounted in the engine valley and the intake manifolds are located on the sides of the block. This new design creates a more compact engine package and reduces the width of the assembled engine. The engine uses air-to-water intercoolers, which is more efficient and provides a shorter air path than using a standard air-to-air intercooler.
Similar to the N54B30, the N63B44 does not use the second generation Valvetronic technology found in other current engines. The principal advantage of Valvetronic is the reduction of intake vacuum, which is not an issue in the pressurized intake found in a turbo-charged engine. Valvetronic, however, is used on the S63B44Tü for the 2013 BMW M5.
It was launched in 2008 as an engine powering the BMW X6 xDrive50i, and later the F01 BMW 750i.
In terms of performance, the N63 is a close match to the N73 V12 engine found in the previous-generation E65 760i/Li, so the BMW N74 V12 engine had to be redesigned for the F01 760i/Li in order to maintain its status as the flagship of the range.
