The BMW X3 is a compact crossover SUV marketed by the German automaker BMW, based on the BMW 3-Series automobile platform, and now in its second generation. BMW designed the X3 in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria — who manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW for the first generation. Production of the second generation vehicle has transferred to BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA.
Following the X5, the X3 was the second vehicle marketed by BMW as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

The BMW F25 is the 2nd generation model of the BMW Sports Activity Series X3, on sale since 2010. The 2011 X3 was unveiled on July 14, 2010.The new car is larger than its E83 predecessor and is assembled in BMW's Spartanburg Plant, in Greer, South Carolina in a new manufacturing facility alongside the existing X5 and X6 assembly hall.
The F25 platform is the second generation of BMW X3 being released for the 2011 model year. For this generation production will move from Austria to BMW's US factory in Spartanburg, SC which currently produces the X5 and X6.
The F25-based X3 is almost as large as the original X5 E53.
For 2011 the F25 X3 is available in the US, only with a 3 liter inline 6 cyl. petrol engine either normally aspirated or with a twin scroll turbocharger. All US market vehicles come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In other world markets various combinations of engines are offered including 2 and 3 liter diesel engines with either the 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. All X3's are equipped with BMW's X-Drive all wheel drive system.

Power for the North American version of the X3 comes from BMWs' N52 3.0L Direct Injection I6 engine for the xDrive28i shared with the new F10 528i and BMWs' new N55 3.0L TwinPower Turbo (single turbo twin scroll) Direct Injection I6 engine for the xDrive35i as seen in its larger facelifted X5 sibling.(For the 28i the I6 N52 engine is to be replaced with the four-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo N20 engine all across the BMW lineup for the 2012 and 2013 model year; implementation date in the X3 is to be confirmed.)
Both engines are mated to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. The U.S. market gets the 3.0 inline-6 and automatic transmission combination; no four-cylinder diesel engineversion will be sold. Outside the USA & Canada, the X3 is offered with three diesel engines: the 20d (2.0 liter I4 diesel), the 30d (3.0 liter I6 diesel), and BMW's new 35d (3.0 liter TwinPower Turbo I6 diesel). In some European countries, the 35i and 28i petrol engines are not offered on the F25.
The X3 F25 has received high critical acclaim for its class-leading performance and efficiency with BMW's award-winning N55 engine and its second place standing on Ward's 2011 Best New Interiors, bested only by Audi's flagship A8.
The 2011 BMW X3 xDrive28i and 35i are priced at $36,750 and $41,050, respectively.

The N20 is a turbocharged straight-4 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in 2011 in the new BMW X1 xDrive28i. It is BMW's first straight-4 engine that combines the use of BMW TwinPower turbo technology, high precision direct injection, turbocharging according to the Twin Scroll principle, double VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control. The N20 engine is a part of EfficientDynamics and it will replace the six-cylinder N52 and N53 engines with BMW X1 xDrive28i being the first model to feature this engine . Engine is all aluminium and is lighter and more compact than a six-cylinder engine of equivalent power. On April 20, 2011 BMW announced BMW Z4 sDrive28i model which will use new N20 engine.

The BMW N53 is BMW's 14th generation production straight 6 engine, released in 2007 in the facelifted BMW 5 Series (E60/E61) and the BMW 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93). It is an improvement on the N52 Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine mainly since it has gasoline direct injection technology and can burn stratified. However, unlike its predecessor, it does not contain BMW's Valvetronic technology due to space limitations in the cylinder head.BMW does not plan to put the N53 engine for sale in Australian and North American models due to the high sulphur content of the fuel available in these markets.
The N53 makes use of HPI: High Precision Injection or Direct Injection, which consists of Piëzo-electric injectors directly in the cylinder.
The N53B30-O0 has improved maximum power to 272 bhp (203 kW) as well as maximum torque over the N52B30. The N53B30-O0 can be found in the 330i (E90/E91/E92/E93) and 530i (E60/E61).
The 325i (E90/E91/E92) switched from the N52B25-OL (2.5-litre) to the N53B30-U0 (3.0-litre) in September 2007 (March 2007 for the E93). Despite the increased displacement, the maximum power remained unchanged, and maximum torque has increased just enough to compensate for a longer differential final drive ratio as a result of a shorter useful range (maximum power is given in the N53B30-U0 at only 640 rad/s instead of the 700 rad/s of the older N52B25-OL). The N53B30-U0 can also be found in the present 525i (E60/E61).
The 2.5-litre N53B25-U0 can be found in the present 523i (E60/E61).
U0 subcoded engines seem to be crippled versions of their equivalent displacement O0 versions as they share all internal dimensions and technology.

The N55 is a turbocharged straight-6 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in early 2009 in the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo in the BMW 535i GT model. It is BMW's first production single turbocharged gasoline engine that combines the use of Valvetronic, turbocharging, Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), and direct injection technologies.
The N55 was the first engine to receive the BMW TwinPower Turbo brand name, although it actually uses a single turbocharger, with twin scroll Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) technology taking in exhaust pulses from two groups of 3 cylinders. Valvetronic is used to help reduce throttle losses. BMW has also retroactively applied the "Twin Turbo" moniker to earlier engines such as the N54 straight-6 and N63 V8 which have twin turbochargers but not twin scroll technology. The S63 V8 (the high-performance M derivative of the N63) and N74 V12 have twin turbochargers and twin scroll technology.
The N55 has replaced the N54 in many applications as well as supplanting the high output versions of the N52B30. The preceding N54 was a twin-turbocharged straight-6 with direct injection technology that did not use Valvetronic. The N55 has reduced emissions and fuel consumption in keeping with BMW's Efficient Dynamics initiative.
The N55 is mated to ZF's new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic in most applications, though the 2011 BMW 3-Series will instead use the 6-speed automatic with Steptronic, and a 6-speed manual is usually available for cars (sedans, coupes, wagons) but not crossover SUVs.
