BMW E89 is the chassis code of the second generation of BMW Z4. It now has a retractable hardtop like the Mercedes SLK replacing the previous roadster and coupé versions for the 2009 model year. There are exclusively six-cylinder engines on this generation. However, there is speculation that turbocharged four-cylinder motors may replace the non-turbo six-cylinder powerplants.
The new model was officially announced on 13 December 2008. The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Since the new Z4 now has a retractable hardtop, it no longer comes in separate roadster and coupé versions. The two-piece, electro-hydraulic retractable hardtop in lightweight aluminium shell can be folded up or down in 20 seconds automatically. In the open state, the boot capacity is 180 liters (if closed: 310 l).
In the Z4 sDrive35i, the new 7-speed double-clutch gearbox is used. In the 23i and 30i a six-speed sports automatic transmission with Steptronic is offered. Fitted as standard is a 6-speed manual transmission.
EfficientDynamics regenerative braking is standard in most regions. The Drive Dynamic Control is standard, which include NORMAL, SPORT, SPORT+ modes. Optional Adaptive M Sport Suspension adds electronic damping control.
The hand brake is electro-mechanically operated.

Compared to the previous generation Z4, the new vehicle has grown 148 mm (5.8 in) longer, 9 mm (0.35 in) wider, 2.5 mm (0.098 in) in wheelbase, and is significantly heavier, adding between 150 kg (330 lb) and 235 kg (520 lb) in unladen weight, when compared to the previous model.
The E89 is not produced, as its predecessor, in the Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing facility, but in Regensburg.It is also the first BMW roadster to use iDrive.

All BMW Z4 have as standard safety equipment: ABS including emergency brake assist and CBC (Cornering Brake control), pretensioner and belt load limiter, and ESP with ASR. Furthermore, they are equipped with four airbags (driver/front seat passengers and two side airbags). The dynamic stop light feature has two stages, indicating how strongly the brakes are being applied. For normal braking, the main light element blinks, as well as blinking just before the vehicle comes to a standstill. Finally, two roll-over bars behind the seats and a reinforced windscreen protect occupants in case of roll-over.

Only the rev counter will reveal how quickly and comfortably the new eight-speed sport automatic transmission Steptronic in the BMW Z4 sDrive20i and sDrive28i changes gear. The additional gears reduce the rev interval of the engine between shifts making them barely perceptible. At high speeds the eighth gear reduces revs to increase comfort and lower fuel consumption. The system is also supported by the newly developed converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever or the paddle switches on the steering wheel to change manually.

The N20 is a turbocharged straight-4 automobile engine from BMW. It was launched in 2011 in the new BMW X1 xDrive28i. It is BMW's first straight-4 engine that combines the use of BMW TwinPower turbo technology, high precision direct injection, turbocharging according to the Twin Scroll principle, double VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control. The N20 engine is a part of EfficientDynamics and it will replace the six-cylinder N52 and N53 engines with BMW X1 xDrive28i being the first model to feature this engine . Engine is all aluminium and is lighter and more compact than a six-cylinder engine of equivalent power. On April 20, 2011 BMW announced BMW Z4 sDrive28i model which will use new N20 engine.

The N54B30 does not use the second generation Valvetronic technology found in the naturally aspirated N52 and the newer (single) turbocharged straight-6 N55.
Surprisingly the engine block of the N54B30 is similar to the older generation BMW M54B30 engine - all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. This is because the newer N52 aluminum-magnesium engine block was not deemed as suitable for turbo-charging with the above-mentioned engineering goals. As a result, the N54B30 is physically heavier (195 kg (430 lb)) than the very light (161 kg (355 lb))N52 engine. This also explains why the engine block size is identical to the older M54B30 at 2979 cc/181 in³ instead of the 2996 cc/182 in³ of the new N52B30 3.0L engine. There are some differences between the M54 and N54; the M54 is a single-piece block, with the water pump housing cast into the block, and is a closed-deck design, compared to the N54's two-piece block with a separate bedplate, electric water pump, and open deck.
According to BMW, the N54B30 produces 306 hp (228 kW) and 295 ft·lbf/400 N·m. Third party testing has revealed the engine is significantly underrated, producing 332 hp (248 kW) and 311 ft·lbf/422 N·m in one test. The engine uses two small low-pressure turbochargers to remove turbo lag at low elevations. For this reason, the turbo pressure is only 8.8 psi as the engineering goal was to offer the same driving feel as with naturally aspirated engines.
In the Asian-only F01 730i/Li variant, the twin turbochargers are removed leaving the engine to be naturally aspirated.

The N54 has been found in every BMW nameplate, except for the 6 Series, X3 and X5.
For the 3 Series, the N54 engine powered the 335i high-end configuration from the 2007 model year onwards, replacing the 330i and its 3.0L naturally aspirated straight-6 as the top model (aside from the BMW M3).
For the 5 Series, the N54 engine powered the 535i midrange configuration from the 2008 model year onwards, replacing the 530i and its 3.0L naturally aspirated straight-6 as in that segment. The top model (aside from the BMW M5) was already renamed from 545i to 550i for 2006 as it saw an increase in its V8 engine output from 4.4L to 4.8L.
The eventual successor N55 retains the N54's horsepower and torque, while improving emissions and packaging and reducing fuel consumption, so it has replaced the N54 in many applications as well as supplanting the high output versions of theN52B30. However, the N54 engine has more output potential and is easily modified with aftermarket tuning to produce in excess of 400 hp (298 kW). A version of the N54B30 with higher power and torque but across a narrower peak torque band was introduced in the F01 2009 BMW 740i. While the 2011 BMW 335i sedans and the face-lifted 2011 BMW 335i coupes will be offered with the N55, the N54 will be retained in the higher-performing 335is.
Most N54 engines are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, while the 6-speed automatic with Steptronic is optional. However, the 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35is and the 2011 BMW 335is have either a 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
