The R-Class is a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) offered by Daimler AG in 2006 model year under the Mercedes-Benz brand. It is the first full-sized multi-purpose vehicle ever produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was first seen at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show as the Vision GST (Grand Sports Tourer) concept, and the final production vehicle was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The R-Class is built on the W251 chassis, and is assembled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Toluca, Mexico. It is priced between the M-Class and the GL-Class. It was initially marketed by Mercedes-Benz as a "Sports Cruiser" and later as a "Family Tourer". The R-Class is offered in two wheelbases, 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and 3,215 mm (126.6 in), the latter being the lone offering in the US. Models using the BlueTec diesel engine were introduced for the 2009 model year in certain markets, with other markets getting Mercedes' BlueEFFICIENCY technology.

2007 changes to lineup Pre-facelift R320 CDI L with the AMG pack Mercedes-Benz announced in May 2007 that the R-Class range would be broadened. DRIVING DYNAMICS

The new R-Class doesn't just stand out in terms of its size and extraordinary shape. It also makes a lasting impression with its new masculine-sporty front and rear-end design, as well as its broad radiator grille. The model is further accentuated by elegant chrome trim elements from the optional chrome package, which underscores the vehicle's dominant visual impact. New LED daytime driving lamps (optional) and modified tail lights featuring LED and fibre optics draw a lot of attention, as does the attractive blue-tinted windows in combination with the sports package.

R 300 and R 350 4MATIC The R 300 and R 350 models demonstrate the power of understatement. These V6 engines with four valves per cylinder and continuously variable camshaft adjustment deliver spontaneous power delivery with an output of 231 hp for the R 300 and 272 hp for the R 350. The petrol engines also allow for relaxed cruising in higher gears – and the consumption figures are impressively low. (R 300: fuel consumption combined: 10.5-10.8 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 246-253 g/km; R 350 : fuel consumption combined: 11.1-11.3/100 km)

7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission The optimised 7G-TRONIC is at the cutting edge of transmission technology. Seven forward gears ensure small changes to engine speed and exceptionally smooth gearshifting. When shifting down through the gears, 7G-TRONIC’s multiple downshift principle allows it to skip several gears, enabling rapid shifting. A torque converter lockup clutch, which is active from first gear, and the transmission control system deliver lower fuel consumption and excellent acceleration. Thanks to the standard-specification direct-shift transmission DIRECT SELECT, the R-Class centre console is free for other uses. The automatic transmission positions are changed using the selector lever behind the steering wheel. You can select P, R, N and D without taking your hands off the wheel. Two transmission modes are available: "S" for Sport and "C" for Comfort. The current mode is displayed in the instrument cluster. If you want to change gears manually, use the DIRECT SELECT steering-wheel gearshift paddles (with transmission position D engaged). These are included as standard.

Engine Generation

The Mercedes-Benz M272 engine is a V6 automobile piston engine family used in the 2000s. Introduced in 2004, it is based on the M112 V6 introduced in 1998. All M272 engines have aluminum engine blocks with a 90° vee angle with silicon/aluminum lined cylinders. The aluminum DOHC cylinder heads have 4 valves per cylinder. Direct injection is used in a limited fashion on the 3.5 L V6, whereas others use conventional port fuel injection. All have forged steel connecting rods, one-piece cast camshafts, iron-coated aluminum pistons and a magnesium intake manifold. Like the M112, a balancer shaft is installed in the engine block between the cylinder banks to deal with vibrations in the 90 degree V6 design. This essentially eliminates first and second order moments. A dual-length Variable Length Intake Manifold is fitted to optimise engine flexibility. Continuous VVT was adopted for the first time. Featured on both the intake and exhaust camshafts, each can be varied through a range of 40 degrees. The twin spark plug system was replaced by a regular single spark plug per cylinder. New electronic coolant flow control has replaced the mechanical thermostat for improved engine warm-up and optimum control of engine temperature. Also tumble flaps are used to improve output at low engine speeds.

E30 The E30 is a 3.0 L (2996 cc) version. Bore is 88 mm and stroke is up to 82 mm. Output is 231 PS (228 hp/170 kW) at 6000 rpm with 221 ft·lbf (300 N·m) of torque at 2500-5000 rpm. M276 (base) There has been one variant of the M276 engine announced so far. This version has a displacement of 3.5 liters (3499 cc) with a bore of 92.9 mm and stroke of 86 mm. Output is 306 hp (225 kW) at 6500 rpm with 273 ft·lbf (370 N·m) of torque at 3500-5250 rpm.

7G-Tronic Transmissions Range

7G-Tronic is Mercedes-Benz's trademark name for its seven-speed automatic transmission. This fifth-generation transmission was introduced in the Autumn of 2003 on 8-cylinder models, and was the first seven-speed automatic transmission ever used on a production vehicle. The 7G-Tronic debuted on five different eight-cylinder models: the E500, S430, S500, CL500, and SL500. It is also available on some six-cylinder models including the new 320 CDI engines which uses a VTG turbo charged common rail diesel engine. However, all V12-powered cars such as the S600 and S65 AMG still retain the 5G-Tronic, which has a torque capacity of 796 lb·ft (1,079 N·m), as the newer 7G-Tronic is limited to 542 lb·ft (735 N·m), not enough to handle the torque from the V12 engine.Also, while rear-wheel drive W211 E-Class cars have adapted the 7G-Tronic, these with 4MATIC retain the five-speed automatic, although the next-generation W212 E-Class released for the 2010 model year adopted 7G-Tronic all across the lineup including 4MATIC. The company claims that the 7G-Tronic can save up to 0.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers (depending on the car) and has shorter acceleration times and quicker intermediate sprints than the outgoing 5-speed automatic transmission. The 7G-Tronic has two reverse gear ratios: 3.416 and 2.231. The winter mode, also recently named 'comfort' mode, starts out in 2nd forward and 2nd reverse. The transmission can skip gears when downshifting, allowing for quicker acceleration. It also has a lockup torque converter on all seven gears, allowing better transmission of torque for improved acceleration. The transmission's case is made of magnesium, a first for the industry, to save weight. The 7G-Tronic is the fifth-generation transmission for Mercedes-Benz. About 65 percent of Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans, wagons, and sport coupes are purchased with automatic transmissions (with that figure rising). However, about 88 percent ofMercedes-Benz E-Class sedans and wagons are purchased with automatic transmissions, and automatic transmissions are standard on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 7G-Tronic transmission is built at the Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart-Untertuerkheim plant in Germany, the site of Daimler-Benz's original production facility. The 7G-Tronic is currently available on the SsangYong Chairman W. In July 2009, Mercedes-Benz announced they are working on a new nine-speed automatic.

AMG SpeedShift MCT Mercedes-AMG developed the 7-speed MCT "Multi Clutch Technology" planetary semi-automatic transmission. The MCT transmission is essentially the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission without a torque converter. Instead of a torque converter, it uses a compact wet startup clutch to launch the car from a stop, and also supports computer-controlled double declutching. The MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) acronym refers to a planetary (automatic) transmission’s multiple clutches and bands for each gear. The MCT is fitted with four drive modes: “C” (Comfort), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) and boasts 100 millisecond shifts in "M" mode. MCT-equipped cars are also fitted with the new AMG DRIVE UNIT with innovative Race Start function. The AMG DRIVE UNIT is the central control unit for the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and all driving dynamics functions. The driver can change gears either using the selector lever, or by nudging the steering-wheel shift paddles. The new Race start Function is a launch control system which enables the driver to call on maximum acceleration, while ensuring optimum traction of the driven wheels. It is available on the 2009 SL 63 AMG and E63 AMG, and will be used for the 2011 S63 AMG and CL63 AMG, and the 2012 CLS63 AMG and C63 AMG.

Safety

The R-Class scores "Good" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) front crash test. But was given an "Acceptable" rating in the side impact crash test before 2009 models built after September 2008 because the test dummy's torso faced excessive loads. For 2009 models built after September 2008, Mercedes modified the seatbelts and interior door trim and the IIHS rated the R-class "Good" overall in side impacts allowing the R-Class to receive the Top Safety Pick award. Thatcham's New Car Whiplash Ratings (NCWR) organisation tested the R-Class for its ability to protect occupants against whiplash injuries with the car achieving the top 'Good' rating overall. The R-Class was tested by Thatcham's New Vehicle Security Ratings (NVSR) organisation and achieved the following ratings

R63 AMG The AMG version of the W251, the R63 AMG, was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as a 2007 model. It features a handbuilt 6.2 L M156 V8 engine producing 503 hp (375 kW) and 465 ft·lbf (630 N·m) of torque. Mercedes-Benz's 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission is standard across the R-Class lineup, with the R63's version of the gearbox featuring AMG-calibrated shift times with shifting buttons on the back of the steering wheel. The R63 AMG is electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), with 0-62 mph time of 5.0 seconds. The R63 AMG features 4MATIC all-wheel drive like the ML63 AMG. The notion of a high-performance AMG version of the R-Class was not well-received, given the heavy weight of the vehicle, and as Mercedes-AMG in general was accused of stuffing huge engines stuffed into chassis' with poor handling dynamics.Due to low sales, as the majority chose diesel-powered vehicles, the R63 was taken out of production in 2007 along with several changes in the R-Class lineup.
