dRIVING Dynamics______________________________

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a range of executive-size cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in various engine and body configurations. The E initially stood for Einspritzmotor, (German for fuel injection engine); a new feature in volume production vehicles at the time that the E-Class first appeared, with the E as a suffix to the engine nomenclature (e.g. 230E) in the 1950s. It was not until the launch of the facelifted W124 that the E was used as a prefix (i.e. E220) and the model referred to officially as the E-Class (or E-Klasse). At this time all Mercedes cars used fuel injection and the company felt it was not necessary to add this as a distinguishing feature. Due to the E-Class's size and durability, the cars also frequently serve as taxis in European countries. Older models like the W123 and W124 are used in Malaysia as inter-state taxis, and the W211 is used in Singapore as a taxi. Mercedes-Benz also offers special-purpose vehicles (e.g. police or ambulance modifications) from the factory

The W212 replaced the W211 in 2009. Official photos of the W 212 were leaked on the internet on the 9th December, 2008 ahead of its 2009 Geneva Motor Show unveiling. Scans of a leaked brochure were posted onto the internet in January 2009, detailing the whole E-Class range including the new E 200 CGI and E 230 CGI with direct injected forced inducted engines. New features include a blind spot monitor, Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-safe with Attention Assist and Night View Assist Plus. In the United States the E-class will be priced nearly US$4,600 less than the previous model. The E-class coupe is built in Bremen using the W204 C-class platform. The W212 estate was also announced and goes on sale from November 2009. The W212 cabriolet was announced January 11, 2010 at the North American International Auto Show, for sale March 27, 2010 in Europe and in May 2010 in the United States. Features on the 2010 version include folding mirrors when locked. Locking can be done on the touch sensors on every door handle and the lock button of the power closing trunk. The colors available for sedan are: Calcite White, Black,Cuprit Brown Metallic,Diamond White BRIGHT Metallic,Indium Grey Metallic,Iridium Silver Metallic,Obsidian Black,Palladium Silver Metallic,Pearl Beige Metallic, Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Tenorite Grey Metallic. The navigation system also has aBluetooth system that can allow you to answer a call at the touch of a button. When reverse gear is selected, the rear camera shows automatically on the navigation display. After parking,and you call another number on your own cell phone(not car speakerphone) then you can hear the other end of the call.

The design of the W212 and C207 E-Class is inspired by the ConceptFASCINATION design study. Certain elements of the exterior styling are also taken from the preceding W204 C-Class and W221 S-Class. The bulging rear wheel arches are meant to be reminiscent of the fender flares of historic "Ponton" Mercedes models of the 1950s.

Saloon

The E-class saloon was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The new saloon went on sale in Europe in March, 2009 as a 2010 model year automobile.The new E-Class features several new safety technologies including driver fatigue detection, lane-departure warning, and traffic-sign recognition. It also includes features that improve performance, efficiency, and comfort, such as "Direct Control" adaptive suspension, active seats (which change shape to support the passengers in corners), and movable radiator louvers which improve the vehicle's aerodynamics. Standard Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features, such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), airbags, and automatic climate control, are included as well.

Coupé

The 2009 E-Class Coupé was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale in May 2009.The C207 E-Class Coupe is related to the W212 sedan, sharing approximately 60 percent of its mechanical components. The E-Class Coupe also possesses many of the same new and standard features of the sedan.

__ESTATE__________________

Estate

The estate version (chassis code S212) was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show and was released for sale in Europe on August 5. Early models include the four-cylinder-powered E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the V6-powered E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, and the V8-powered E 500.US models will begin sales in June 2010 for the 2011 model year

__CABRIOLET__________________

Cabriolet

The A207 cabriolet was unveiled January 11, 2010 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, USA. It went on sale March 27, 2010 in Europe and in May 2010 in the United States.

Models available in the USA are the E350 (268 bhp) and E550 (382 hp) version. The US versions of the cabriolet feature the AIRSCARF system (a neck-level heating system for front occupants) and the new AIRCAP windshield spoiler system, deflecting air over the cabin for reduced draft and wind noise.

In Australia, a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder E250 CGI model is available, as well as a 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine known as the E250 CDI. AIRSCARF and AIRCAP are options on the E250 models.

Awards

The new E-Class and E-class Coupe were awarded "best-looking car in the world" by AUTOBILD Magazine. 100,000 readers of AUTOBILD voted the E-Class Coupé as the best looking in the "Coupé and Cabriolet" category, as well as electing the Saloon as the overall winner among all new models

The E63 AMG Sedan captures a brilliant blend of overachievement and understatement. A new handcrafted 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 generates 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, achieving a 4.2-second 0-60 run along with greater efficiency. A 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission features a wet startup clutch, a fuel-saving new ECO Start/Stop system and shifts as quick as 100 milliseconds. From the console, the AMG DRIVE UNIT offers driver-selectable setups for the transmission, suspension, steering and 3-mode ESP®. Massive multi-piston brakes and 19" wheels set off exclusive bodywork. From its cockpit, the AMG-enhanced instrumentation, controls and driver assists connect the driver to a performance experience that excels equally on the racetrack and in everyday enjoyment.

The 2009 E63 AMG sedan was unveiled at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. The new performance version of the E-Class is fitted with the same powertrain as the SL63 AMG, including AMG's 6.2-liter V8 and the SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports automatic transmission with four driver-selectable modes including a fully manual mode. Similar to the C63 AMG, the new E63 is more extensively modified than before, with a new, wider front axle, heavily revised suspension, and more distinct body panels.

The optional AMG Performance Package includes lightweight, forged 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with 255/35R19 front and 285/30R19 rear tires, stiffer suspension, a limited-slip differential, a special three-spoke sport steering wheel, and a reprogramming of the electronic top speed limiter to 300 km/h (190 mph) from 250 km/h (160 mph). The 6.2L V8 has 518 hp (386 kW) 465 lb·ft (630 N·m) and will go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds.

Carbon fiber Mercedes-Benz E-Class in development

German car magazine Auto Bild is reporting in its latest issue that Mercedes-Benz is working on a superlight E-Class.
The lightweight edition of the E-Class will be made of carbon fiber (with more rigidity than steel) and weigh in at around 1,300 kg (2860 lbs) - which will be 350 kg (770 lbs) less than the standard model.
The superlight E-Class will also see a new design, influenced by the CLS, with engineers free to go with features such as gullwing doors or no B-pillar given the rigidity of the carbon structure.
The model also seems intended to lower Mercedes-Benz's fleet fuel-economy and CO2 quotients because the automaker is considering both hydrogen fuel-cell and petrol-hybrid drivetrains for the lightweight E-Class.
The superlight E-Class is due in 2015.
