The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a mini MPV produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz. The first generation (W168) was introduced in 1997, and the all-new second generation model (W169) appeared in late 2004. It is available as a three or five-door mini MPV. It is Mercedes' entry level model in most of its worldwide markets, though not in North America or India; the B-Class is the entry model in China, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Mexico, and the C-Class is the entry model in the US and India.

The 2009 A-Class (W169 Facelift, shown in the spring of 2008 and on the road that year) features redesigned front and rear bumpers, new tail lamps and headlights, new grille, new exterior mirrors, a restyled interior design and new upholsteries and colors. The 2009 A-Class was released alongside the refreshed 2009 M-Class and B-Class. The car is also available with Active Park Assist, which enables the car to parallel park itself, with only throttle and brake inputs required from the driver.
Production of the W169 facelift will begin in June 2011, for introduction as a 2012 model.

The Classic SE is all about simplicity and understated style. Exterior touches include radiator grille louvres in dark grey with a high-sheen front edge, an oval steel exhaust pipe, and a new front apron painted in the vehicle colour.
Inside, quality materials and finishes include upholstery in a choice of tasteful fabrics. There’s also an array of equipment to enhance comfort and convenience – from power-operated front windows with one-touch control to a larger stowage compartment with a lid. |
 A-Class ELEGANCE
The ELEGANCE line emphasises its exclusivity with chrome trim strips which run all around the outside of the vehicle. The atlas grey radiator grille and fog lamps also feature chrome trim. At the rear the polished stainless steel exhaust tailpipe gleams. The exterior appearance corresponds harmoniously with the high-quality interior. The elegant myrtle cognac wood trim highlights the exclusive standard of the line as does the "Bastogne" upholstery. Fitting in perfectly are the high-quality leather covers on the steering wheel, handbrake lever and gearshift lever. A front armrest with compartment and the standard seat comfort package provide the necessary sense of well-being, even on longer journeys.

A-Class AVANTGARDE
The AVANTGARDE line flaunts sporty ambition. With the strong V-shape of the bumper cover and the iridium silver radiator fins, it makes its presence known. The bumper painted in the body colour perfectly complements the chrome strips around the vehicle which provide stylish accents. The fog lamps also blend harmoniously into the overall image. From behind, the oval exhaust tailpipe with a polished stainless steel panel and the tail lamps with black diffuser-look inlays on the bumper are an impressive sight. The light-alloy wheels in a powerful 5-spoke design emphasise the dynamism of the AVANTGARDE line. Inside, the strips in diagonally brushed smoke silver aluminium add to the sporty atmosphere. Fitting in perfectly are the upholstery fabric "Bastogne“ in the ARTICO leather look and the high-quality leather covers on the steering wheel, handbrake lever and gearshift lever.

Exterior
A compelling silhouette, whichever way you look at it: from the rising line of the vehicle's front section, to the dynamically arched roof, to the sharp drop of the tailgate – the distinctive profile of the A-Class is unmistakeable. A short, car-wash-compatible aerial is an eye-catching detail which is just as pleasing as the exterior mirrors and door handles painted in the vehicle body colour. Each and every point of view allows the observer to discover a fascinating interplay of rounded surfaces and pronounced edges. The A-Class's rear view also shows automotive design at its best. Its low rear lamps and distinctive rear bumper make the vehicle look broader, making it appear to hug the road more closely, lurking impatiently and self-confidently.

Interior
The interior of the A-Class combines generous proportions with exclusivity. The front seats and the rear of the vehicle offer all passengers the highest degree of comfort, such as with the ergonomically shaped seats. The generously sized all-round glazing and the optional panoramic louvred sliding sunroof or the panoramic sunroof contribute to a pleasurable atmosphere. There are further optional and helpful details to make trips even easier: for example there is a foldable and removable armrest with an optional through-loading feature for the centre rear seat. This makes it ideal for transporting large, bulky objects such as skis.

With the Sports Package, your A-Class is always dressed to impress.
The radiator grille, with louvres in Iridium Silver metallic and chrome trim, makes a bold first impression, while the 17" 7-spoke alloy wheels and oval stainless steel exhaust tailpipe underline the car’s natural style. The interior, too, gets a sportier look: the instrument cluster has a contrasting silver backplate, the sports steering wheel and aluminiumcapped gear shift lever are both leather-trimmed, and the pedals feature stainless steel inserts with rubber studs. In addition, sports seats in
Zandvoort cloth and Artico artificial leather are available as an exclusive Sports Package option.

Now even greener
We've significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising performance. This has been achieved in part through weight reduction and improved aerodynamics.
Petrol models include the superb A 160 and A 180, which both offer ample torque and good fuel economy. We’ve also introduced ultra-green BlueEFFICIENCY versions*, incorporating a range of fuel-saving measures. These include an ECO start / stop function for conserving petrol in heavy traffic, standard on the A 160 BlueEFFICIENCY and A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY.
As for diesel, there’s the A 160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY – with CO2 emissions from 118 g/km.

Precision shifting
The A-Class has 5-speed manual transmission as standard (except the A 180 CDI, which features a 6-speed set-up as standard). Both transmissions provide precise, easy shifting with a satisfying short-throw action.
But it’s the optional Autotronic continuously variable automatic transmission that really sets the A-Class apart. Unique in this segment, it constantly adapts to your driving style, combining outstanding comfort with performance and efficiency. Incorporating Speedtronic cruise control, Autotronic offers a choice of transmission modes. Sport mode delivers an exhilarating driving experience while Comfort mode is characterised by lower revs, smoother acceleration and lower fuel consumption.Autotronic even offers an additional Manual mode, which splits the range into seven virtual gears – you simply nudge the gear lever to change up or down. |
A flawless ride
The suspension on the A-Class offers an ideal blend of ride comfort and dynamic driving characteristics. Features such as our patented parabolic rear axle system – exclusive to the A-Class and B-Class – enable supremely balanced, sporty handling.
Selective damping is another key component, recognising road conditions and adapting suspension behaviour accordingly. On smoother surfaces damping is reduced, helping to minimise vibrations and tyre wear, and enhancing roll support on corners. On rougher roads, full capacity is restored to improve comfort, safety and stability. |
ECO start / stop
The ECO start / stop function is a remarkably straightforward way to make big changes to emissions and fuel consumption, simply by stopping the engine when it is not in use. It is fitted as standard on the A 160 BlueEFFICIENCY and A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY models.
When the vehicle’s speed drops below 5mph and the transmission is in neutral, the engine is safely stopped. Once the ECO indicator on the instrument display confirms the system is operational and the vehicle is at rest, you can release the foot brake pedal and the engine will remain off until the driver engages first gear. As soon as the clutch is operated the engine smoothly restarts. ECO start / stop is networked to the climate control system, so the engine is prevented from stopping when the cabin temperature falls below a comfortable level. The system also recognises low-speed manoeuvres such as parking, and will not operate at these times. The benefits to fuel consumption and emissions are considerable, especially during inner-city journeys with frequent periods of idling, whether at traffic lights or when caught in congestion. The unique way the system is integrated with the engine, transmission and climate system means you won’t experience disruption to your drive, only reductions on your fuel bills. |

Mercedes hasn't been shy about discussing the A-Class AMG, but we haven't seen the model - until now.
Caught heavily camouflaged, the prototype is distinguished by high-performance brakes, AMG wheels and a sporty dual exhaust system. More interestingly, the car is being benchmarked against the Volkswagen Golf R so the company appears to be taking things pretty seriously.
Power will likely be provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine with 320 hp (239 kW / 324 PS) to 350 hp (261 kW / 355 PS). It is expected to be paired to a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.
