In December 2010, Mercedes released some photos and details of W204 C-Class facelift, which was officially unveiled during Detroit Auto Show in January 2011. Some new features of the new model includes engine start-stop system, 7G-tronic gearbox available for lower end models with revised gear ratios to improve fuel economy, a high resolution screen on the dashboard which has visual functions similar to the S and CL Class models, as well as some minor revision of the appearance of the interior and exterior of the car. The car also features the new Mercedes-Benz Comand APS system, first seen on the 2010 E Class. The new 2012 models are expected to be available at the dealers starting September 2011.

For 2011, a limited-edition C 63 AMG was introduced by the Mercedes-Benz Specialist Products division, dubbed the "DR520". This is the most powerful version of the C-Class to date, with a power rating of 525 PS (386 kW; 518 hp) and 650 N·m (480 lb·ft)) of torque. The DR520 is exclusive to the UK market, with production limited to only 20 units. In July 2011, Mercedes announced an AMG C63 Black Edition. Available only as a coupe, the Black Edition produces 510 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque, propelling it from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
Exterior
The C 63 AMG’s styling perfectly matches it’s exhilarating performance, with AMG front and rear aprons, AMG side skirts and special front wheel arch extensions hinting at the power of its 457 hp (336 kW) AMG V8. In addition, the exterior now boasts new AMG-specific LED daytime running lights, plus a gloss black finish for the front apron cross-bar, an AMG specific bonnet and a revised front grille with a single chrome bar.

Interior
As performance-orientated inside as out, the C 63 AMG boasts an exclusive and distinctive cabin featuring highly supportive AMG sports seats with Black nappa leather upholstery (single or two-tone designo leather is available as an option). There’s also a new AMG instrument panel with colour display and AMG start‑up screen, plus a new flat-rimmed three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with aluminium gear shift paddles and nappa leather trim that’s perforated in the central grip area. AMG 6.3-litre V8
Under the bonnet of the C 63 AMG is a naturally aspirated V8 equipped with track-honed racing technologies. These include variable camshaft timing, four valves per cylinder, an exceptionally rigid aluminium crankcase and a special low-friction coating for the cylinder contact surfaces. For optimum cylinder charging, this high-tech engine also features vertically arranged intake and exhaust ports plus a magnesium variable intake manifold with twin throttle flaps. The result is free-revving performance, exceptional pulling power and instant acceleration at all speeds.
The C 63 AMG delivers 457 hp (336 kW) at 6,800 rpm, plus 600 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm, with in excess of 500 Nm available all the way from 2,000 to 6,250 rpm. The AMG Performance Package creates an even more powerful C 63 AMG: it increases output to 487 hp (358 kW), enabling it to dispatch the 0 to 62 mph sprint in a breathtaking 4.5 seconds. |

AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission
Equipped with AMG aluminium steering wheel shift paddles, four driving modes and a Race Start function, the C 63 AMG’s new 7-speed sports transmission further enhances performance yet uses 10% less fuel than its predecessor. Its Race Start function enables the driver to exploit the engine’s acceleration potential to the full, while benefitting from optimum traction at the driven wheels.
The ‘S’ (Sport), ‘S+’ (Sport Plus), ‘C’ (Comfort) and ‘M’ (Manual) modes each offer different shift characteristics and speeds: gear changes in Sport and Sport Plus modes are around 20% and 40% faster respectively than in Comfort mode, while Manual mode is approximately 50% faster, with shift times of just 100 ms. The transmission also offers automatic throttle-blipping on downshifts. This not only produces a satisfyingly sporty sound, but also helps to reduce load transfer, especially when braking into bends. |
Brakes
For exceptional stopping power, an AMG high-performance braking system, featuring large, internally ventilated and cross-drilled discs, is fitted as standard. It ensures short braking distances and enables the level of brake force to be precisely controlled. The AMG sports parameter steering, meanwhile, is now more direct than ever and offers extra accuracy at high speeds.

Performance Pack Plus
For an even sportier C 63 AMG, simply add options from the AMG Performance Studio.
They include the AMG Performance Package Plus, which comprises an engine upgrade that increases output to 487 hp (358 kW), a Titanium Grey variable intake manifold, an AMG high-performance braking system with composite front brake discs, red brake calipers, an AMG carbon-fibre boot lid spoiler and an AMG Performance steering wheel with nappa leather and Dynamica microfibre trim. Other AMG Performance Studio options include the AMG Carbon Exterior Package, AMG carbon-fibre interior trim, illuminated AMG door sill strips, a locking rear differential and the AMG Driver’s Package, which raises the electronically limited top speed and includes participation at an AMG ‘Power & Passion’ driving event. The Mercedes-Benz M271 engine is a straight-4 automobile piston engine family used in the 2000s.
All M271 engines are built in Untertürkheim, Germany. The family has a cast aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHCcylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder and variable valve timing
DE18LA
This is the last version of M271 engine family. Dimensions are the same as E18ML and DE18ML, but the supercharger has been replaced with a turbocharger; like the DE18ML it uses the CGI gasoline direct injection. Output ranges from 156 PS (115 kW) at 5200 rpm to 204 PS (150 kW) at 5500 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz M272 engine
The Mercedes-Benz M272 engine is a V6 automobile piston engine family used in the 2000s. Introduced in 2004, it is based on the M112 V6 introduced in 1998.
All M272 engines have aluminum engine blocks with a 90° vee angle with silicon/aluminum lined cylinders. The aluminumDOHC cylinder heads have 4 valves per cylinder. Direct injection is used in a limited fashion on the 3.5 L V6, whereas others use conventional port fuel injection. All have forged steel connecting rods, one-piece cast camshafts, iron-coated aluminumpistons and a magnesium intake manifold. Like the M112, a balancer shaft is installed in the engine block between the cylinder banks to deal with vibrations in the 90 degree V6 design. This essentially eliminates first and second order moments. A dual-length Variable Length Intake Manifold is fitted to optimise engine flexibility.
Continuous VVT was adopted for the first time. Featured on both the intake and exhaust camshafts, each can be varied through a range of 40 degrees. The twin spark plug system was replaced by a regular single spark plug per cylinder. New electronic coolant flow control has replaced the mechanical thermostat for improved engine warm-up and optimum control of engine temperature. Also tumble flaps are used to improve output at low engine speeds.

The E30 is a 3.0 L (2996 cc) version. Bore is 88 mm and stroke is up to 82 mm. Output is 231 PS (228 hp/170 kW) at 6000 rpm with 221 ft·lbf (300 N·m) of torque at 2500-5000 rpm.

E35
The E35 is a 3.5 L (3498 cc) version. Bore dimension is 92.6 mm and stroke is 86 mm. Output is 272 PS (268 hp/200 kW) at 6000 rpm with 258 ft·lbf (350 N·m) of torque at 3500 rpm. A direct injected variant debuted in 2006 under the name Stratified-Charged Gasoline Injection (CGI). First fitted to the CLS350 CGI, it produces 292 PS (288 hp/215 kW) and 269 ft·lbf (365 N·m) of torque while lowering fuel consumption. In 2008, the non-CGI engine was uprated to 316 PS (232 kW) at 6500 rpm and 265 ft·lbf (360 N·m) of torque at 4900 rpm. This was achieved by raising the rev-limit to 7200 rpm, increasing the compression ratio and other modifications to the valvetrain.

Mercedes-Benz M156 engine
The M156 is the first V8 automobile engine designed autonomously by Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Mercedes-AMG, as previous AMG engines have always been based on original Mercedes engines. The engine was designed to be a naturally aspirated racing unit, and will also be used in a number of high-performance "AMG"-badged Mercedes-Benz models.
The M156 displaces 6,208 cc (6.208 L; 378.8 cu in) and shares very little with other Mercedes-Benz engine families like the M155. The bore spacing, block design, and other features are unique to the AMG engine.
Although it displaces 6.208 liters, the engine will be marketed as the "6.3" to commemorate the famed M100 engine, Mercedes' first production V8. It displaced 6.3L.
The engine uses a 102.2 mm (4.02 in) bore and 94.6 mm (3.72 in) stroke. Output is 375 kW (503 hp) at 6800 rpm with 630 N·m (464.7 lb·ft) of torque at 5200 rpm.
The engine, however, has been uprated to produce 525 hp (391 kW) (and 465 lb·ft (630 N·m) of torque) in the late 2007 S 63, E 63, SL 63, CLS 63 & CL 63 models.
Mercedes has claimed it is the world's most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine.

7G-Tronic
7G-Tronic is Mercedes-Benz's trademark name for its seven-speed automatic transmission. This fifth-generation transmission was introduced in the Autumn of 2003 on 8-cylinder models, and was the first seven-speed automatic transmission ever used on a production vehicle.
The 7G-Tronic debuted on five different eight-cylinder models: the E500, S430, S500,CL500, and SL500. It is also available on some six-cylinder models including the new 320 CDI engines which uses a VTG turbo charged common rail diesel engine.
However, all V12-powered cars such as the S600 and S65 AMG still retain the 5G-Tronic, which has a torque capacity of 796 lb·ft (1,079 N·m), as the newer 7G-Tronic is limited to 542 lb·ft (735 N·m), not enough to handle the torque from the V12 engine.]Also, while rear-wheel drive W211 E-Class cars have adapted the 7G-Tronic, these with 4MATIC retain the five-speed automatic, although the next-generation W212 E-Class released for the 2010 model year adopted 7G-Tronic all across the lineup including 4MATIC.
The company claims that the 7G-Tronic can save up to 0.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers (depending on the car) and has shorter acceleration times and quicker intermediate sprints than the outgoing 5-speed automatic transmission.
The 7G-Tronic has two reverse gear ratios: 3.416 and 2.231. The winter mode, also recently named 'comfort' mode, starts out in 2nd forward and 2nd reverse.
The transmission can skip gears when downshifting, allowing for quicker acceleration. It also has a lockup torque converteron all seven gears, allowing better transmission of torque for improved acceleration. The transmission's case is made ofmagnesium, a first for the industry, to save weight.
The 7G-Tronic is the fifth-generation transmission for Mercedes-Benz. About 65 percent of Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans, wagons, and sport coupes are purchased with automatic transmissions (with that figure rising). However, about 88 percent of Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans and wagons are purchased with automatic transmissions, and automatic transmissions are standard on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The 7G-Tronic transmission is built at the Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart-Untertuerkheim plant in Germany, the site of Daimler-Benz's original production facility.
In July 2009, Mercedes-Benz announced they are working on a new nine-speed automatic.

Amg SpeedShift MCT
Mercedes-AMG developed the 7-speed MCT "Multi Clutch Technology" planetary semi-automatic transmission.
The MCT transmission is essentially the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission without a torque converter. Instead of a torque converter, it uses a compact wet startup clutch to launch the car from a stop, and also supports computer-controlled double declutching. The MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) acronym refers to a planetary (automatic) transmission’s multiple clutches and bands for each gear.
The MCT is fitted with four drive modes: “C” (Comfort), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) and boasts 100 millisecond shifts in "M" mode. MCT-equipped cars are also fitted with the new AMG DRIVE UNIT with innovative Race Start function. The AMG DRIVE UNIT is the central control unit for the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and all driving dynamics functions. The driver can change gears either using the selector lever, or by nudging the steering-wheel shift paddles. The new Race start Function is a launch control system which enables the driver to call on maximum acceleration, while ensuring optimum traction of the driven wheels.
It is available on the 2009 SL 63 AMG and E63 AMG, and will be used for the 2011 S63 AMG and CL63 AMG, and the 2012 CLS63 AMG and C63 AMG.
